AT933 Mics...4.7 Mod?
« on: July 18, 2008, 03:43:24 PM »
Have been trying to get my low profile rig up to par.  Noticed after my first gig running my SP-CMC-8 (AT933) ->MT2 that I had some distorted low-end on my recording.  Was at a VERY loud rock show.  Obviously my first mistake was not running a batt box.  I am also now concerned that my entire prob was with the caps themselves distorting and am considering a 4.7 mod.  Any discussion on pro's vs. cons to having it done?  Will this warrant the need for a preamp at softer shows?

I have these mics (AT 943's) and have recorded very loud shows with a 9v tiny battery box.
No problems whatsoever.

I think the AT 933s use different caps and have different distortion properties than the 943s that edtyre mentioned. Someone correct me please, if I am incorrect.
You either record it or it's gone forever.

As far as I know, you don't need the mod. But I got mine modded anyways lol and they work like a charm, right on top of the stacks too!

Here's an interesting thread (which talks about the at943 and the 4.7k mod):

SP-CMC-8's=AT 943's
and do not need a mod.

These are terrific low cost mics and will perform very well in all types
of situations with a battery box.

Yes, if you purchased them today, the SP-CMC-8s come loaded with the AT943 capsules. However, a couple of years ago, I am almost positve that they came loaded with the AT933 capsules. Sound Pro definitely sold the AT933s at some point.

Anyway, if you do indeed have the AT933 capsules, they will benefit from the mod.

Thanks to all..+T.

I indeed have the AT933 caps.  Bought the mics about 10 years ago maybe?  Never used them much but have dusted them off and am planning on putting them to much more use.  Think I may go ahead with the mod.  Are there any reasons not to?

you can always purchase a ST-9100 preamp from Chris Church and ask him to install a 4.7k mod switch for you. That means that in some cases that you need that mod (VERY loud situations or Stack taping) you can enable it. You should know that the 4.7 K mod decreases the overall gain of the mics by 10 db so far, so a Preamp will give you the extra gain you need.
Actual Gear:

stealth  - AT943 (c,o,sc,h) > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Ultrastealth  - DPA 4061 > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Open - BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > Segue Dogstars > Marantz PMD671 busman t-mod

Playback: PC > M-Audio Fast Track Pro > KRK RP6 actives

Thanks for that info.  Wasn't sure how that worked but now makes sense.  Think I'll start saving up for the 9100.  That sounds like the perfect fit for my needs.  From looking at the specs on the AT 933 (was told be sound pro's it's identical to the 943) then the mics should handle up to 125 db before distorting when running the batt box.  I imagine then that the mods not a neccessity unless I am right on top of the stacks.  Would be nice having the option on the preamp though.
Have a outdoor festival coming up that I'll be running low pro.  Thinking of running the AT933 > bATT BOX > 10DB attenuator > MT2.
Since there will be about 7 acts I plan on taping, may try with and without the attenuator on different sets.  Hopefully at least some of it will come out nice.

Anyway, thanks for all the help you guys!

You do realize the 4.7K switch only works if your mics are terminated in mini-XLR connectors, right?  If they are already terminated into a single miniplug, it's too late for the switch, your only options being to add the mod fulltime (within the mic cables) or switch the mic connectors to a mini-XLR on each and then use a preamp with the switchable 4.7K mod.
