Need help for setting up km184 DIN on a T-bar
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:23:28 PM »
So I've been trying to set up a DIN configuration with a pair of km184s along with a T-bar and the mic holders.  I have the angle (90 degrees) and the distance (20cm) down, but due to the length of the mics, there's not a whole lot of room for XLR connectors/cables.  Of course, using a right-angle XLR connector would be perfect, but the problem is that because of the protruding red neumann label of the mics, the mics can only sit in the mic holder with the label facing up.  That, unfortunately, means that right-angle connectors will have the wire stick up instead of down, which isn't ideal since the wire will be in opposite direction of the stand.

I've scoured the internet looking for RA connectors where the wire would point down when connected to the km184s with the red label facing upwards (to the sky), but none of them do.  The Neutrik RX series RA connectors can be adjusted by 45 degree increments but only 7 positions can be used (which means that probably the cable will angle out somewhat instead of just point straight downwards to the ground), so this might be my best bet.

Does anyone know of any XLR connectors that would be useful in this situation?  Otherewise I'll probably go with the RX series Neutriks.  Thanks in advance!

Get a riser to mount on one side of the t-bar.
You'll need two of the top adapter and two of the bottom.
1 of each works fine too, I like to get a bit higher which is why I use two.

I use one or two of these on one side.

Then put a 3/8"~>5/8" adapter on top of the sennheiser riser and screw on the mic holder.

Thanks for the suggestion, +T.  I was hoping to use a riser only as a last resort, although I guess it shouldn't make much of a difference sonically.

edit: how high is this btw, looks like maybe 1" or so?  This is likely the easiest thing to do rather than try to get those Neutrik connectors and then send them to someone on TS to use in a new set of custom cables.

Most do use a riser or a vark bar, which is a t-bar with a riser.
I use them all the time with no issues.
Here's another picture with the KM184's in ORTF with a homemade riser & t-bar.

This makes sense, no need to reinvent the wheel just need a riser or two.  8)

Thanks again for your help!

They are about an inch - 1-1/2 tall. One of each should be plenty but I always get two
of the adapters. Can never have enough.
It's simple and inexpensive and produces.

No problem.

If you don't want to use a riser but still want to use RA connectors, mount the mics under the bar instead of on top of it. Doing that will have the cable coming out pointing down. If you want to put a loop in the cable so any vibration doesn't get passed to the mic, simply loop the cable over the bar.

Another option, though more expensive than any of the other suggestions offered so far is to have one of the cable builders fabricate some shorties. Most will do so with the cable exiting the housing at any angle you desire.

Thanks for the idea!  It seems so obvious now, but for some reason I didn't think I could flip the bar over which I believe is possible.  It might look a little odd but should work great with the neutrik RA connectors.  I think I'll try both methods, though, since I just bought those risers from B&H an hour ago.  8)
