iRiver problem
« on: August 08, 2008, 10:35:24 PM »
Hi everyone,

Last weekend I went on a small southeastern tour for Projekt Revolution and I tried to tape 3 or so shows. The first one was fine, then I lost my preamp -> iRiver coord, but I ran mics into the iRiver anyway. Anyway, so I was recording the 2nd show - I hit record, put the hold switch on, and then checked after the show to hit stop (95 mins later), and it had stopped recording at 195mb. I'm using Rockbox and this is an iRiver H120. I'm not sure exactly what happened. This was in West Palm Beach. I did the exact same thing the show before WPB, in Charlotte, and everything was fine. It was fully charged, so that wasn't a problem, and the disk space was barely used. I had about 10 CDs in 320kbps mp3s on there, and a few gigs of lossless material. That should be maybe 5gb max of the 20gb space on the iRiver right?

Any idea why it stopped recording? I deleted all the 320kbps mp3 albums after West Palm, and ran the iRiver the night after in Tampa and everything was fine. Is there some Rockbox / iRiver glitch that makes it stop recording somehow? Thanks for all your help.

How much free space is your iriver showing?  When you delete files from it do you use the unit's delete function or do it through windows explorer?  If you use the latter method the unit will show incorrect free space.  This is just one though.

Always use the iriver to delete files.

Otherwise you need to do the following to keep up to date the irivers internal space-management:
Select "System/Rockbox Info/"Now press the joystick =>you see "scanning harddisk"-message =>free space is allocated and you should see the actual free space now after the scan.

Deleting files through Windows Explorer messes up the irivers "space-management"...it somehow doesn´t know that files got deleted.

I always run the "System/Rockbox Info/press the joystick =>scanning harddisk"-process before the show starts ;).

I have never had a problem with deleting files from the h120 with Windows provided you empty your Trash Can in the same session before you disconnect it, but deleting with the unit itself is always a good idea.  I actually did run out of space once recording, it was not pretty and freaked me out pretty bad, thankfully it was just my back up rig for the evening.

Yeah I always delete through Windows Explorer.I guess this is what happened, because I never delete through the iRiver. The week before the show, the iRiver was jam packed with like 17gb or so worth of material, so I guess it thought the disk space was full. Now I'll always delete through the iRiver itself. Thanks for all the help, I'm glad you all knew what the problem was. Unfortunately another lesson learned the hard way. Now I know!

Yeah, that sounds like your issue. Like rsimms says, recycle bin empty. Or system info-scan.

We have all learned that on the hard way.  But it isn't a bug, it's a windows thing!

Rockbox comes with a disk tidy plugin that can clean up all this mess. I do not think it does a free space scan however...
