Perception 420, SP C3, or NT2A?
« on: September 24, 2008, 12:54:14 PM »
Please help me make up my mind about a new pair of LD condensers. I have so far narrowed my choice down to the new AKG  Perception 420 (with a whopping 28 mV/Pa), the Studio Projects C3, and the Rode NT2A. All three cost more or less the same. Any other suggestions in this price range?

I mostly record outside soundscapes with rather low sound levels.

I like the NT2a and the spc3, the 420 I have not heard.   The spc3 sounds fantastic as a stereo pair, I made some wonderful recordings with it.

That said I would look for a used pair of AT4050's, or get two singles on ebay.  AT claims any two 4050 will match...  The 4050's might be the best sounding LDC I have every had the pleasure of working with, as far as diffuse field recording goes...  You may also want to look at the ADK LD's....

Allthough I have not heard the the NT2A I have heard the NT2's and I loved their sound.  The NT2A has a self noise of only 7db....that is quiet...........Tuff choice...either way looks like you would be happy... I too am curious about the AKG420's........

Just bought a pair of NT-2A's. The low self-noise eventually won me over. Will be taking them for a short vacation tomorrow and find out more about them.

Thanks to all who replied.
