PAL to NTSC Convertion?
« on: October 13, 2008, 08:28:08 PM »
Hi. I hope this isn't too elementary a question for folks here. I should know this, but I don't.

How do I go about converting a DVD from PAL to NTSC format? I have an ISO image, PAL format, of the excellent and chilling BBC production entitled Threads, which came out in 1984. I want to give coppies to some of my friends, but need to get it into the right format first.
I'm using Nero 6 Ultra under WinXP if that helps any.
thanks!

check doom9.net - there should be a guide describing what you will need to do...

yeah, I'd point you to doom9 too.

no personal experience, but from years of reading these types of threads, I can tell you it is a very hard thing to do.

Also, PAL format is generally a better quality format.  I can't remember the exacts specs, but more lines of resolution or something comes to mind.  You'd be better off telling your friends to go buy a $30 dvd player from target that will play anything you throw at it, pal, ntsc, +r, -r dual-layer, etc

Most DVD players manufactured these days can handle both NTSC and PAL formats.  You might want to try it before you go to all the trouble.

My newest unit is almost 2 years old and it plays PAL just fine.  The oldest one is probably 6 or 7 years old and it does it as well.

Agreed.  Give it a try first before going through the work.  If not, another site I would check out is http://www.videohelp.com/.  They have guides for just about anything digital-video-related you can think of, sometimes with pictures.  Additionally, they have user reviews and links for many video tools/programs, quite a few of which are FREE.  Just doing a quick search I found this thread here -> http://forum.videohelp.com/topic352043.html.

Found another link here -> http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Convert_PAL_NTSC_DVD_page1.html using Nero Vision as a converter (as boojum suggested) but they're using Nero 7; not sure if the option is available in Nero 6.  Good luck.

I went out and bought a new player because converting takes quite a bit of time.
