AT943's or (cheaper) alternative? Help required.
« on: November 07, 2008, 04:35:30 PM »
In the market for the AT943's, but for my budget they're quite pricey. Do like 'em though and some friends have them and heard quite a few of their recordings (mainly Indie / Alt rock gigs). Very pleased with how they sound.

Plan to run them with my R-09HR and bb with roll off.

Wondered on here if anyone could recommend an alternative to these mics, but a bit less pricey ? By alternative I mean something with as good (or better) sound on the final recording......

I want something robust and will be using 100% for stealth, so something that can stand up to a bit of abuse would be a definate. Something that I love the AT943's for.

Any thoughts (and weblinks) would be very much appreciated......

hmm, look through the yard sale section for some used Church Audio mics. Either the CA-11's or the CA-14's.
Those mics definately are in the same category at the 943's.....

I say "used" only if you are tryng to stay within a certain budget.

I have the 943's and am impressed with the CA-14's, so a pair is being shipped to me right now.  I agree with norma, you should check out what Chris Church has to offer.

Here's a link I posted in another thread with samples of 943's (cards) & CA11's

http://rapidshare.com/files/156756889/MicSamples.zip

They sound pretty close, I don't think you'd be disappointed with CA mics.

Thnaks for the responses, appreciated.

Ziggz > grabbed those 2 files, now which one is which (CA v's AT) ?

Only concern about the CA's is the 'hardiness' of the mics. Looks like dragging the mics through my clothing (I wear 'em neck mounted under a hoody) could cause some serious wear and tear......?

With the CA-14's, you have to be more careful because the body of the mic is within the foam windscreen, but I collar mounted them when I used them with no ill effects.  You couldn't throw yourself into a mosh pit with them, but in a seated venue or just standing in one place, I doubt you'd have issues.

Hello:

On the subject of sample recordings, here are two that may be of interest.

Recording made with Tascam DR-1 built in mics:
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/MP3files/PRODUCTS/dr1mics/slammin.mp3

Recording made with Audio Technica AT853's (Sound Professionals SP-CMC-4U):
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/MP3files/PRODUCTS/dr1externalmics/slammin.mp3

There are additional samples, including the AT943's (SP-CMC-8):
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/TAS-DR-1

They were made on different nights, same venue, same location, same performers.

I realize that trying to compare these sample to others in this thread is difficult, but I thought they would be worth a listen.

Best Regards,
