Mics to Stealth with on a Tascam DR-100?
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:50:48 PM »
Howdy,

I've recently purchased a Tascam DR-100, and its a great little device. Took a test spin with its internal cardioid mics and the result was pretty good.

So, now I would like to equip myself with good stealth mics. I would be using them primarily for jazz shows in halls (some possibly acoustic), but ideally would like to purchase something that could be used in a very wide range of situations.

I would very much appreciate suggestions.......

Thanks

ps: I've been considering the shure mc51b lav mics ... but don't know if they would be useful or would be geared to the wrong type of sound (voice).

See the retail thread on this board for some choices on mics.  I like Church Audio there, but to each their own.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Some thoughts on price would be a helpful start for us.

The DR-100 has phantom power, though I understand that the phantom adversely impacts the battery life.  But, the phantom does give you more options, esp if you power the deck externally...

Anyway, a few thoughts:

$200 range: CA-14, CA-11, SP-CMC-8, SP-CMC-4 (omni and card options available for all. The SP mics have switchable caps). Also the new CA-1 omni.
$350 range: Countryman B3 (omnis)
$500 range: Audix 1280 (you can get the caps only and Church cables, but you can also stealth the mics with bodies pretty easily, though they need phantom then), AKG ck9x series capsules modified to run on a battery box (setting up this rig takes some doing, but it sounds good)
$1000 range: DPA 4061 omnis
$3000 range: DPA 4021, Schoeps Mk4+CMR cables+Naiant tinybox.  The DPAs would have the advantage that they can be plugged right into your deck and run off its P48.

Cardiod mics are more flexible than omnis for most situations, though I find that the less money you are willing to spend, the better the quality of an omni will be relative to a cardiod (i.e., cheap cardiods sound pretty cheap; cheap omnis can sound amazingly good)
