Could you elaborate a bit on what happened to your mini jack? Is it mechanically broken? Have the electronics blown up? Where did you hear they are prone to do this? As a FR-AV2 owner I'm interested to hear some more details, so I may possibly prevent this from happening to me...

It’s the 5v PIP that’s the problem. It’s the reason I bought the AV2 and I guess was the reason you bought it too. Thankfully mine only gets very light use.

You could buy the Zoom F3 (no PIP) or H1 XLR (2.5v only), or any 32-bit recorder with XLR inputs, and then add an XLR/PIP adapter such as that sold by Immersive Soundscapes which I use and think is very good.

Of course you could just use it with the AV2 that you already have. The benefit of this would be not having to change the settings in the AV2 which I always find a pain to remember.

My Tascam X8 puts out 3v PIP on inputs 1 and 2 if you disconnect the attached internal mics.

I would just go the XLR > PIP route with what you have.

32bit float in mono mode.
24 bit in stereo mode.

Do note that the Immersive Soundscapes XLR/PIP adapter provides 9V PIP, so make sure your mics can handle that if you'd go that way.

I use the recorder mostlywith the xlr inputs but It would be nice to have it function with the mini jack as it should.
I contacted Tascam who told me thatit was out of warranty but to send it to their repair facility to see what they could
do for me. I have not done that yet.
I read a review somewhere where the reviewer complained about the build quality particularly as compared to the
DR100 mk3and his mic jack had also failed.

What can I say? When it came out, I immediately thought it would replace my trusty DR100, but that wasn’t the case at all. I even had a bad experience with this device, which I hardly use anymore.

The promise was great: 32-bit floating point, color screen, timecode, XLR and pip input, Bluetooth headphones.

After a short time, I realized that it fell well short of my expectations:
– Plastic case
– Cumbersome menus with tiny buttons
– No battery, so you need a battery charger.
And worst of all, within a few weeks, there were loose connections on the XLR inputs and headphone output, which made it unusable outdoors. The ZWEE connectors are of poor quality and fragile; the mini jack connector broke within two weeks (even though I’ve been using my DR100 every day in the workshop for five years without any problems).

A big disappointment despite the sound quality, which is its strong point.

Thanks for elaborating. I am sorry to hear about your mini jack issues, but personally I find it a bit hard to generalize and draw harsh conclusions from a few reports by unfortunate users. If these issue are structural, I'd expect more reports on the FR-AV2 thread. Overall, I'm still very happy with my FR-AV2 purchase, and (fingers crossed) I did not have any issues with the connectors so far. The rather negative review by Immersive Soundscapes do contain some personal preferences, IMHO. E.g. the absence of an internal battery is for me a pro. I really hate it when I have to throw out a device that's perfectly fine except from its internal irreplaceable battery being degraded or broken. Indeed, the buttons could be better, but I happily setup and control the device from the app on my phone. The only really disappointing thing for me is the very slow USB transfer speed, which makes me often take out the SD-card when transferring recordings to the PC. (I know, patience is a virtue...) I expect the awkward sd-card cover to break sooner or later because of this. And, I would have really liked to be able to enable phantom power on the XLR inputs while set to line-in mode, just like with the F3. That would prevent me for having to use external attenuators when using my XLR AT853 mics with loud music. Hopefully they'll be able to add this feature by a firmware update sooner or later if it is possible with their electronic input design...

Don't get me wrong, I love my FR-AV2. I use it my most of my stereo recordings and all of my m/s recordings as it has
decoded monitoring.I will probably use the convertor with with the low profile xlrs  with my chopped F3 for stealth purposes.
