Poll: What what you do? (Bad file content)
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:18:57 AM »
i recorded george mcconnell saturday night.  (please no gmac bashing, take it to a kiddie board)  they were extremely nice to me and happy to give out the sbd patch, and are very excited about the recording...in fact, the band has already contacted me and asked about a copy.  George and other bandmembers even asked questions about what i was running, how often i tape there, editing, etc..

So, about 68 minutes into the gmac set, my left audience channel (Channel 1 on the R44) starts to show static.  its not the worst static ever, but defintely noticable, even after being mixed with the sbd.  If youre able to listen and get through the songs and not notice, you will hear it in between songs in the quiet parts.  And like all foreign sounds on a recording, once youve heard it, its hard to ignore it..

heres what ive done:  (and pardon my terms here, im new to some elements of wavelab)
i isolated the right channel, then created a stereo file off that channel.  so essentially i now have two channels of the right microphone.  i have mixed that with the sbd (with heavy leaning on the sbd) and produced a decent little mix considering.  its not perfect, but it does have some aud texture to add to what i thinks is already a decent sbd mix..(and most importantly has no static!)

ive also tried to remove the static with the declicker.  i only did it once, and the results are not that different, i dont really have faith that multiple run throughs will remove static.  this aint clicks or pops, this is perpetual static..

I dont want to shelve the tapes.  I dont just tape for me; in addition to friends and attendees that want copies, the band is eager for the tapes as well..i really just put the poll up to see what other tapers would do..ive already gotten some answers from my local peers, but im curious what the more global community thinks...

heres some samples if youre curious:

clean mtx of part 1 (no static):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/gtiwok

clean mtx of part 2 (with right channel overlay):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/aeovod

just the aud (2 Channels) with the static:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/n9sx98

worse sample of aud with static:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/81jfxm

as for the cause...ive got lots of testing to do today... ::)

There's static in sample gmac2009-03-28_aud_static.mp3?

If that's the extent of the static (I don't hear it, though I've not listened on the full playback system yet), I'd mix the stereo AUD + SBD.

i get mono board feeds sometimes and the mix up nicely.  either patch the static spots or just dub the good channel and mix away!

That's mono with the one channel duplicated into both, not stereo. Completely acceptable though and I have done this as probably many others here that have had issues with one channel.  You have to salvage what you can of your efforts.

Good Mono beats bad stereo any day

If you think about it, two mics provide an ambient and space effects by sounds hitting them at slightly differnt times

I think the mono aud blended in with the sdb will add a similar ambient affect

I use to do this with a 2 track cassette deck..... one channel sdb and one channel aud, made a great tape when mixed right

I think I would send all possible versions to the band, with an explanation, and let them choose which they like best.

Going one step further (or back, I suppose) than Dennis:  just (or also) send the the raw files of everything and let them decide how they'd like to do with it.

You could also take the good audience track (mono), 'stereoize' it and blend it with the board.

20-40 ms left-right delay usually can sound OK.
