Looking for pack for a small taping rig....
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:09:08 PM »
So I've searched through many many threads to see what kind of packs the tapers were using to transport their rigs.
I realized that my needs were different than most here, but I thought that maybe others might be in the same position as me so here's what I got:

Kata DR-467 (digital rucksack)

Here were my criteria:
I needed a rugged well made pack. It had to hold a compact recording rig, camera, and laptop. It had to be very well cushioned. It had to be very affordable.
The DR-467 meets all these criteria.
Here's what I like about the Kata.
It looks like an ordinary back pack.
The interior is bright yellow (which might seem odd at first) but when you're searching for something "black" in the pack in low light it is very useful. All the zipper pulls have a small bead of reflective tape woven in so it can be easily identified when light hits it in the dark. The compartments are very well protected. The laptop compartment is big enough to hold my 17" HP. The camera compartment tilts out as you can see from the picture. The top compartment has more than enough room for cables, mics, and a small recorder. There are several small pockets on the outside for little goodies.
There are many more features, but I figure you all can look those up for yourselves.
I got mine at AValive for around $58 plus shipping
Regards,

Steve

Looks good to me; I especially like the yellow inside.

I know many people like the PortaBrace bags, but since I never record "in the bag" I've gone with a much less expensive solution.  I just use an 18" zippered tool bag from Sears.  It's big enough for two Sound Devices recorders, a keyboard, headphones, a couple of hard drives, power supplies and sundries.  Costs all of maybe $20.  Alas, it is not yellow inside.
