Marantz PMD 661 might be your best bet.  It has XLR w/phantom, digital coax in (no digi out though I don't think), and operates with four AA batteries.

660's are generally considered a great box, with clean preamps.  16bit only, and no digi in/out.  If you are firm on that requirement, stick with the 661.

True, I forgot about that.  The 661 is 24bit which is a big advantage over the 660.  Also, the 661 is significantly smaller than the 660, although still not exactly an easily stealthed recorder (but seems definitely doable).  I've been thinking about getting one too.  You can put out an ISO on the yard sale subforum, but it hasn't been out that long so it might not be too easy to find used yet.

I agree about the 661.  Go to Oade's website and buy a modded box direclty from him, or buy a stock one and send it out to Busman.

The 660 is a really good box, but if you're jumping in, I'd also suggest going straight to 24bit, mainly because you'll have a much harder time messing up recordings in 24bit-land than 16-bit because of the headroom you get with 24bit...you can run at -12db and never worry about peaking in 24bit and your recordings will never suffer for not running right up against the edge in 24bit.

Another option would be a small preamp like the Aerco MP-2 into an R-09HR or a similar small 24bit handheld.  The problem with that suggestion though is the Aerco is impossible to get unless you order one, which then takes months to receive.  If you know where to find an Aerco though, that would be a really great sounding option.

Cool, would love to hear what they CCMs sound like going into the 661!  661 is about $670 shipped for the concert or super mod from Oade, or if you get it on ebay with the cashback deal you can get one for about $550 unmodded.

660's are generally considered a great box, with clean preamps.

Wasn't there a problem with stock 660 distorting under high SPL? IIRC, it was pretty much essential to have them Oade modded to make them perform in a concert setting.
