SPL Meter in Canada?
« on: October 05, 2009, 05:02:57 PM »
Hi folks.  We don't have Radioshack here in Canada. They were bought by Circuit City and renamed The Source some years back. My local Source store has no idea what an SPL meter is...

So, anybody know where to get an SPL meter in Ontario Canada?  I need it to calibrate my main playback system, namely, to find out what settings give me a peak loudness of 83dB SPL. (I'm currently taking a mastering course and need to calibrate my levels).

SPL Meter in Canada?

With all due respect to Chris for finding the meter at The Source...

I have both meters. I bought the Scosche at Wal-Mart because it was a good deal there. However, I ended up buying the Radio Shack meter afterwards and though the cost was 2x more, I don't regret it. It is still a great value.

Here are reasons why you might might want to consider the Radio Shack meter.

- it does both A-weighting and C-weighting.
- it has an external mic output (RCA) that you can easily patch into a soundcard.
- calibration data is available for it which works with REW (Room EQ Wizard) a free java room tuning app from HomeTheatreShack.com . This app has views for impulse, spectral decay, waterfall, RT-60, Energy-Time and more. You just need the meter, a soundcard, and java runtime on your computer.
- it can be mounted on top of a mic stand using a small thread adapter.
