Mic max spl question
« on: November 14, 2009, 05:19:49 PM »
Having an issue running a mic on an electric guitar amp.  The condenser mic I'm using has MAXIMUM SPL :  125 dB But, running it into an BM2p+ it is too hot of a signal and clipping it.  I have another mic with MAXIMUM SPL :  130 dB.  Question is is this a big enough difference to overcome the volume?  It is clipping the UA-5 pretty hard

The distance between the loudspeaker and the microphone is of great importance too. Double the distance and the level picked up by the mic goes down by about 6dB. You can also try a line level input (only possible if you are not running phatnom power).

Ftar posting this and then having to run out the door to record I realized that the problem I was having was not totally  a mic problem.  What was happening is that the UA-5 would only let me turn the gain down so much.  With the knob turned all the way down it was only a low setting not off.  I switched that mic feed to a set up where I could lower the levels more that the UA-5 allowed and all was fine.  Thanks for your input guys.
