Dunno what he means exactly, but the general idea seems to be that you should try to have your peak levels about -6dB or so.  With 24bit, you can aim lower, say -12dB to -6dB, because raising the levels in post generally won't lead to intolerable amount of noise/hiss (if you record at 24bit versus 16bit).

Next time I get out there I will try recording with all the limiter/agc/low-cut turned off.  I understand the difference with recording at 24-bit and 16 bit....but I don't understand this:

it just means that your recording is peaking (volumewise) at 12 db below the max (in other words: it shouldn't be louder than the little -12 on the R-09 screen)

Dunno, but I think they meant to set them one time and don't fiddle with them.

For the bass cut, I never use it unless there's some problem that can't be avoided and I know it'll help. In your case, if you were stuck with built-ins and the bass got distorted regardless of levels I'd give it a shot. Normally it'd only be useful if someone were spebking directly into them though.
