New: Sanyo PS501/503 RM - smallest 3-mic recorder
« on: February 19, 2009, 09:16:15 AM »
Hi all,

Sanyo keeps churning out tiny recorders for the Japanese market.
Here's a new record: smallest handheld with 3 built-in mics, and smallest cubic footprint overall for any 16bit PCM recorder.

Size: 35.4mm × 103mm × 13.9mm
Weight: 53g (including batteries)

It comes in two varieties, with 2GB/4GB internal memory. All new models have a microSD card slot so they are equal from a taper perspective.

I created a sizeasy with the other contenders for the smallest recorder:

There's also an new two-mic recorder, ICR-RS110M, although it's less interesting for our needs. Built in radio makes it bulky and pricier, without adding any taper value:

Thanks for the update.  This model appears to be similar to the Sanyo model sold in USA as the Yamaha Pocketrak 2G. They are the same size and weight.  There is no WAV recorder smaller than this pair.  In comparison, the R-09HR is more than 3 times larger and heavier.

The updates include the three mics (vs 2 in the 2G), slightly redesigned button placement, and the addition of the microSD card slot.  Both models record only 16/44.1 WAV files, and both run on a single AAA cell.

The Pocketrak 2G cost $400 when introduced in Spring of 2008.  Now it's available for less than $200, perhaps to clear out inventory so the new Sanyo model can take its place.

Sanyo makes a large number of hand-held recorders.  Among these, my choice would be the Yamaha Pocketrak CX ($300).  It's about twice as large as the 2G, but its controls are easier to use.  You need small fingers to control the 2G without looking closely.
