Problem with Halo Mounts for Studio Projects CS Series Mics
« on: December 29, 2009, 06:28:34 PM »
Just Just got a set of CS5's at an incredible price off of E-Bay (they seem to be sold out now).

Anybody have any experience with the CS series halo mounts?

In order to get both mics close together to use setups like mid side or blumlein it is necessary to unscrew the pivot from the one end of the shock mount and screw it on the other end (you then use a vertical stereo bar to mount them properly). It is supposed to be able to unscrew, but they won't budge on either of my mounts. I've twisted quite hard and am scared to try to twist harder or use some sort of a wrench for fear of breaking the mounts.

My LSD2 had a similar mount.  I remember hanging up side down that knuckle had a natural tendency to loosen up.

Here is what I would do...  Take the knuckles off, put them back in the box, and forget about them.  Then use mounts which screw into the 3/8" thread inside the body of the mount.  Use big pliers if necessary to get the knuckles off.  I don't think you will break it.

Thanks Joe. Will fool around with your suggestion after waiting to see if I hear back from the company I bought them from (just sent an e-mail a few minutes ago).

Yeah, the knuckles do come off and as you say they are pretty worthless. I don't see how you could ever arrange these mics in a midside pattern with the mounts the way Studio Projects shows it in their video made by Brent Casey:

Just can't get everything tight and stable enough to hold firmly in place. I guess I'll start with simpler patterns.
