Milab DC-196 AB test recording
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:42:31 AM »
Within the last month, I bought a pair of Milab DC-196 mics.  Wanting to know how they compared to mics I already owned, I make some test recordings.

These tests consist of recording the same concert with two mic pairs.  Both pairs were mounted on the same stand within about 10 cm of each other.  Both pairs were in a MS configuration.  The mics were connected to a Sound Devices 788T recording at 44.1/24.  I edited with Audacity, but I did no processing other than decoding the MS, level matching, alternating the mics in the file, and conversion to 16-bit FLAC.

In this recording, mic A is heard first, then I switch to mic B, then I switch to some other mic either A or B.  Can you tell when the switch is made?  How many times do I switch mics in the recording?  If you can hear the difference between A and B, is one really better than the other?  After a while I’ll disclose the mics and the sequence in the recording.

I used Megaupload for the first time so I may have messed up.  Please let me know if the link does not work.  The file is called Mic_AB.FLAC

Nice sound.  Pretty closely matched, I couldn't detect the switch on a quick casual listen last night.  Perhaps a slight change in the sibilance between verses, but that's a stretch.  The first verse felt ever so slightly more detailed on top than the second.

Bumping this thread to solicit more comments about my sound sample recorded with a pair of DC-196 mics.  Thanks.
