CA-14 mounting options
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:44:17 PM »
Hi Everyone

I have a pair of CA-14 mics with the permanent wind screens and without the permanent clips.

Would I be able to fit them into the SP-GNA-3 mic mount?

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3

Thank you in advance.

P.S. I have received a pair of omni and cardioid mics, one of the mics is marked with a red piece of shrink wrap on it and the other is not. Please tell me which mic is marked and which is not. Thanks again

i push my omini/card ca14's through the opening everytime and they fit in there nice and fairly snug. they can have a tendency to fall out if there is a lot of bumping going on. I don't have the permanent clips but i think it would still work.

get yourself an index card and write this down and carry it in your bag...I do because I never remember.

CA14 OMINS = RED HEAT SHRINK
therefore
CA 14 CARDS = NO HEAT SHRINK

we know it has it but it's at least not red.

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

Thanks rastasean for the quick response.

So you do have the the permanent windscreens on your mics and they do fit inside the SP-GNA-3 mic mount?

Since you don't have permanent clips, can you recommend of any clips that will work well with the CA-14 mics?

And just out of curiosity, is it a known fact that the mics that are marked in red are the omnis because I couldn't find it anywhere?

Thanks again

I'll start with the last question.

check out this link...

CA-14: how do differentiate cards and omnis just looking

red heatshrink on them then they are omni mics.

All CA14 omni/cards have permanent wind screens whether we like it or not. Don't try to remove them, either.

I gave up on trying to use clips but I think sound pros have something that works, i think Audio-Technica clips from what others have posted but I'm not totally certain.

FWIW, I got the mount you did but I added in the shockmount which attaches either to my light stand or a windtech clamp like this:

Thank you very much rastasean.

If you don't use clips with you mics, how do you mount them while recording stealth?

Do you use tape to connect them to the collar/hat?

Are you satisfied with the windtech clamp? I am thinking of buying the exact setup as yours with the SP-GNA-3 mount+shock mount from sound professionals but I thought of buying the Manfrotto super clamp instead.

Did you have any experience with the super clamp as well?

Do you use any extension pole between your clamp and you shock mount?

no problem, glad to help.

I haven't recorded stealth w these mics so I don't know how I would go about mounting the mics. I do have some AT clips but I really haven't tried to use them for the CA14s, they are for the AT853s I have. I can't wear a hat so i would clamp them to my glasses or dreads.  ;D

the windtech clamp has worked very well with my setup. I use it a lot to clamp to my taper friends stand and its never fallen or been a hassle to get in a good position. The other night I clamped to a thin Ibeam at a club and it worked fine as well.

no matter what you start with, you will end up buying more and more. this isn't a bad thing because the ability to clamp in many places is always good. the super clamp is a great clamp but the wind tech would most likely be perfectly fine for you right now. Spend the money on a good stand because you may not always be able to clamp to something. plus with a stand, you can go higher.

I have yet to use an extension pole but the bogen extension pole is nice, goes to 92"  and then there's the matthews extension pole that goes up about 54".

what is your recorder?

I used to have a Zoom H2 but I have returned it because it broke down after a short time and I wasn't satisfied with the poor build quality.

Right now I am having trouble choosing between the Sony PCM-M10 and the Edirol R09-HR. I am leaning towards the M10 because of all the positive reviews that it received from TS members but I haven't purchased anything yet.

I was thinking of buying a good light stand as you said but most of the shows I go to are in small clubs and not in outdoor venues so I am afraid I will attract people's attention.

I was thinking of buying one of the extension poles you mentioned along with this base:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546481-REG/Manfrotto_003_003_Backlight_Stand_Black.html

and with some kind of clamp and that will cover all the options.

I know the stand (base + extension pole) will not be very high but it will not attract much attention either because the base is flat. On the other hand it will probably be less stable so I am not sure if that is the way to go.

Please tell me what do you think and thanks again.

I go to a lot of shows that are indoors in small (not tiny) clubs and stands can attract people's attention but you just need a can of keepoffmystand (R) and you spray it around the perimeter of your stand and equipment.

kidding.  :P

I have the 09HR and really enjoy it. There are also tons of great reviews on here from the users of it. I got it before the m10 was out so I was debating between 09hr and pcm-d50. I think all three are great recorders its just a matter if you want any digital in or only analog. If I wanted digital in (which I'm thinking about) I would get something like the pmd 660 or 661 but most people on here agree that the microphones are thebiggest chain and the majority of the money should be spent on them...after awhile of being a taper to make sure you enjoy doing it.

So do you have the CA9100 pre-amp or have you got another pre?

I have not used that base you linked to but I personally wouldn't get it because when you have a 92" pole on top of it, i doubt it will be very stable. but then again it is low to the ground and may perform well. the footprint is almost two feet which seems linda wide just for three legs.

I have used this stand with the ca14s:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/250416-REG/Smith_Victor_401290_RS75_Black_Light_Stand.html#specifications

Its very lightweight which can be good and bad and the footprint is just a few inches over two feet.

:D I better get a few cans of keepoffmystand spray. I am sure they will be really handy in the shows I go to.

Actually I was just getting ready to buy the R09-HR a few months ago when I saw that there is a new Sony recorder coming out. I have waited till now and I am still having trouble deciding between the two. From what I have heard both units are really good and I think I will be satisfied with whatever unit I end up getting.

I have been looking at the Marantz pmd 660 and 661 while searching for a recorder but I have no clue what is the digital in and what is it used for? I guess it has nothing to do with external mics so what is it used for?

I have got the CA-9100 pre-amp from Chris Church. I haven't used it yet but I have heard a lot of good things about it.

I looked at the different light stands at B&H photo and haven't came across the one you used. It looks really nice, with a small collapsed size, small footprint, pretty high maximum height and it is lightweight.

I might buy it instead of the separate base along with the extension pole. I thought of buying the separate pole along with the base so I will be able to use the pole for clamping and as a light stand. The nice thing about the light stand you used is that it goes as high as the manfrotto 3 piece extension pole and its collapsed size is 22 CM shorter so it is easier to carry around.
