Topic: Sony PCM-M10 and Panasonic HDC-HS700

How (or can) I use  my Sony PCM-M10 with my Panasonic HDC-HS700 camcorder for better sound quality and if so how? I'd like to be able to walk around and record with this configuration.

so you want to replace the camcorder internal mics with the M10 internal mics? doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade to be worth the trouble.

It just seems that the Sony has better audio quality than my HS700.

You should be able to patch the headphone out on the m10 to the input of the camcorder.

if you can, I would keep the audio separate from the video and sync the two later. this is good for redundancy so if the audio on m10 fails, its still on the video.

but as freelunch suggests, you can patch audio out of camcorder into m10. I would keep it in manual mode and adjust gain.

You're probably right, most don't have audio in as in mic in so I would never buy that kind of camera.Its total failure on the manufactures part for a $900 camcorder NOT to have mic in. Hopefully the vast majority have headphone OUT so you can at least monitor the onboard mics...

jabomano evidently owns a panasonic camera with headphone out and mic-in, i hope it would for a little over a grand.

If he wants to be able to walk around with the camera, I'd say that keeping the sources separate would be best, else it's going to sound like you're walking around with the camera.  Set the M10 somewhere safe and in a good-sounding spot, and let it roll while you walk around with the camera.  Swap out the audio tracks in post.

Just for the record, that would involve an extra AD conversion compared to swapping the tracks in post. YMMV...

If you can disable any AGC try the heaphone out to mic in thing. Mating files in post could be pita

soon i hope to test my m10 out into my cameras mic in
i do it with my fr2le and have it dialed in good
the only thing holding me back on the m10 is that i don't have any shows i can "afford" to blow testing things

Throwing some ideas out there... 

1.  run a preamp instead of recorder into the camera.  Run whatever mics you want.
2.  run a wireless mic system into the camera and set up your mics in sweet spot.  No phasing issues as you move around.
3.  record separately and sync in post.

Panasonic does have some of the best camera audio quality in their cameras, but hesitate to recommend feeding mic input with hot not attenuated line level signals, so be cautious with lots of trials when attempting this.   Agree best tact is to leave camera audio recording to run using better flash deck audio for adding quality in post process.  Here is a photo of my video rig using headworn stereo-surround mics for getting POV quality audio.  Same general idea maybe useful for handsfree camcorder recording
