Need post-production EQ advices (small sample inside)
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:35:55 PM »
Hello,

I recently taped a show from the audience. The sound quality is ok, but it could be slighlty improved.
In my opinion, the recording sounds too metallic. It lacks of bass and has too much treble (With less treble, the bass might be ok though).
So was the mix at the show.

I already tried some post-production EQ during the last 3 evenings (using Adobe Audition, T-Racks 24), but wasn't able to get a decent result.
I'd like to have your opinion on how the recording sounds and get some EQ advices.

Here's a representative 1 minute sample :
http://thebrokentape.com/eq/lh_eq.wav (wav file, 17M)
http://thebrokentape.com/eq/lh_eq.flac (flac file, 12M)
http://thebrokentape.com/eq/lh_eq.mp3 (mp3 320kbps file, 2,4M)

(you can get whatever the file you need depending on whether you want to listen to the sample, make some EQ tests...)

Recording information :
Source : MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod done by Church Audio) (on hat) > CA-9100 > Edirol R09-HR @ 24/48 (line-in).
Location : The so called "Sweet Spot" :)

Thank you for your help !
Mics : Sony ECM-717, MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod), SP-CMC-4 (at853), 2x DPA4060, 2x DPA4061
Battery box : SP-SPSB-6524 w/bass roll-off filter, MM-CBM-1
Preamp : Church Audio CA-9100
Recorders : Sony MZR-700PC, Edirol R-09HR, Tascam DR-2d

Metallic as in the cymbals in the mix? In which case you can make a dip somewhere past 8.5 to about 15kHz (where exactly and how much is up to your liking). You could also try using a multiband compressor and hone in on the cymbals and bring them down a little. Both of these might end up making the vocals and some other stuff less clear though.

As for the bass, It just sounds kinda boomy to me, i'd drop down everything below 120Hz by about a dB or two (bass roll-off too maybe?) then (if it's still a bit muddy) try making it clear by boosting just a bit somewhere from about 200 to about 500Hz. It's up to you and what equipment you're using to fine tune these changes.

Here's some links that might help you out:
