Interesting! How do you control bitrate/freq. and phantom on/off?

I've been reading that Saffire 24 does remember settings after initial setup:

There is a button on the front face for phantom. The sample rrate is set on the computer and saved to the preamp. I never have to change the sample rate in the field so not an issue for
me. I'm suprised there are not more of these used. I like the sound of the preamps
and converters.

The Saffire 14 has only been shipping since Aug. 2010. Looking at the entire line of Focusrite standalone models, I guess the common drawback is rather the lack of suitable bitbuckets with coax SPDIF in.

Regarding the powering, the cool thing about Firewire is that the specs are supposed to allow any voltage between 7V and 30V. So you should be able to power it with a 9V DVD battery, provided you got a custom cable with the right polarity.

Anyway, the reviews of the Saffire 14 look very promising, with a street price of only $200 at the moment! I guess it would pair up nicely with a 661:

I use a 12volt lithium battery that I have for multiple recording applications. I use the digi out to both a microtrack and tascam dr 680, both decks have never failed.
