R-09HR powers off while recording
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:45:30 PM »
Twice now my R-09HR has powered off while recording.  I keep the recorder in my jacket pocket so I can see possibly hitting the "stop" button as I don't have the "hold" switch on but totally powering down?  It's not the batteries, so has this happened to anyone else or any ideas?  I checked the recorder periodically and it was recording but when the show was over the recorder was off.  I run the mics to a Church preamp and then to line in.  I'm at a loss here.  Anyone?  Any help is much appreciated.

this has been discussed before but to save you the looking its the batteries prolly came unconnected ..What happened when you tried to turn the deck on again did it say the batteries were fully charged? I would say auto shut off if you weren't completely sure that you were recording .

When I turned on the recorder again, the batteries were at about 80%.  I have a back-up recorder but I really like my H-09HR.  This just bugged me.

I don't know if you have had this recorder for a long time or not, but if you have perhaps the contacts that connect to the battery have built up a resistance. I would try  a contact cleaner like DeoxIT.

I always use the hold button are you using rechargeable batteries in the R09 If so try another set of batteries you could have a bad one.

What kind of SD card are you using?

When I first bought my R-09 back in 2007 I did some serious in-home testing of it and found some serious issues with the SD card I had bought to use in it (and even the same brand replacement SD cards after the first one). Now I only use one brand and I have 8 of them that have never failed. I won't mention the brand names to bias anything right now.

I always use Energizer Lithium AA's. I use to use rechargeables back in the DAT deck era, but they can fail at just about anytime even when they seem fine (i.e. they can all of the sudden drop off when you least want it). For me the price of the lithiums isn't an issue for the security they provide, especially when it's a recording you have only one chance at.

I would buy a pair of AA  lithiums, put them in the deck, set it up in front of the TV and hit record and get some levels going, set it on hold and let it record and see what happens. If the deck shuts down at anytime before the SD card is full, then I'd definitely check the SD card, try another brand if you have another one.

That's how I did my original R-09 testing and the "bad" SD cards were doing exactly what you are saying. I'd come back anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour after recording was started and the R-09 was shut-down (time depending on which SD card I was trying). To double check it wasn't a bad battery, I plugged in the power adapter and did the same test again. And again the deck was shutting down and I could for sure say the batteries were fine.

Since I switched to the SD brand I have used since then I have had zero issues like that.

Does it happen to record anything before it powers off? (So, what is the end of the recording like?) Could the record level be so low (for like 10 minutes) that it thinks it is not in use and therefore powers down?

I will - I have always found SanDisk the best and most reliable and have never had a failure yet.

I want to thank everyone for their valuable input.  I did, in fact, put in a new card before I recorded the show before last.  It was a brand (well known) I had not used before.  I will try one of the cards I know works well and see what happens.  Again, thank you.

I agree with the above comment, that if you accidentally stop the recording, the machine will automatically power down after a preset time. Engage the hold switch after you start the recording.

I don't have the HR version, but on my RO-9 if I give the unit even the slightest bump the batteries are momentarily disconnected and it powers off.  The battery door has a distinct "give" in it.  Now, I tape it shut and put a strong rubber band round it.  Not a  good design I'm afraid.

That's also what I use and have never had an issue.

Transcend was the brand I had major issues with.

However, some people swear by those........

You can, and I would highly recommend, disabling that function. Go into Power Management and switch it to OFF. If something goes awry and the recording stops, you can quickly start it back recording if that function is OFF. If it shuts down, you have to power it back up before you can re-start the recording. Especially if you're one that starts the recording at your seat when the lights go down, by that time the unit could already be powered down......

>Engage the hold switch after you start the recording.

That's a definite must and also remember to hit record TWICE to start it recording, the light around the record button blinks when you hit it once as "standby" but many people tape over that so they can't see the light, so before engaging the HOLD make sure the time is actually moving if the light is covered.

That's weird, I've had my R-09 for close to 4 years and have never had an issue with the battery door. Not saying there could be some that have that issue, but I've been very happy with the build of it.
