I recently bought a used SP-CMC-4 set. The mics were ATM35's rather than AT853's. What is the difference between these models?

I've searched the forums and it seems that some say they are identical, while others claim the ATM35's handle higher SPL.

Any other differences?

I have used the ATM350 (the newer model) where I work and they seem to be the same. The capsules are definitely compatible with the AT853 as I have tried it. I don't there is really any difference in terms of sound either. I have never put both in a high SPL environment so I couldn't comment on that fact.

The capsules are completely different and are not the same mic. The atm 35 has less bass then the 853. Thats because the ATM35 is designed to be worked close to high SPL sources like percussion and wind instruments. The capsule is more like the 900 series then the 800 series, at least the last one I have worked with and opened up.

I emailed Chris at Sound Professionals regarding the difference between the ATM35 and the AT853, and received this reply:

"They are the same mic. Audio Technica uses the AT853 in the ATM35. In fact, there are several different mics that share the same body and elements."

I agree with that too.  The ATM35 is the one with an instrument clip and a windscreen around the capsule + element, right?  Yeah, those are the same.

The M350 or whatever is a different (omni) mic IIRC.

Maybe this was an old ATM35 I fixed but the body was the same size as the 900 series mics. Not the 800 series. Maybe they changed them at some point in time to the 853 Style body?

Edit I was thinking of the PRO 35 that uses a 831 series capsule. Not the 83X series capsule I stand corrected.

The ATM35 (now discontinued) was sold by Audio Technica with the instrument clip and a windscreen around the capsule + element, and marketed as a musical instrument mic. It's still on their website, here:

But mine came in the SP-CMC-4 set in the rubber holders with detachable clips.

I thought that the ATM350 was the replacement for the ATM35. It comes with the same instrument clip and windscreen around the capsule + element, and is also marketed as a musical instrument mic. It's cardiod as well.

The atm350 is the "new" version of the atm35, using the new capsule which has better shielding and off axis response. The only difference between the 853 and ATM350 or older ATM 35 is how they are powered and the mounts.

Would how they are powered have any effect on how much bass they could handle? Or is the frequency response identical for all three mics?

I work at a local theatre/arts center and I run sound for all kinds of performances. It's my weekend gig- I'm a student during the week
