Rode NT2000 - Anyone using these?
« on: January 22, 2011, 06:44:17 PM »
Hey guys. I use large diaphragm condensers for in-studio use normally. Recently I became fortunate enough to get 2 free Rode NT2000 mics, as reward for making a video about another Rode mic called the PinMic. I made this song using only the PinMic, a lapel mic designed to be easily hidden. Anyway, they were stoked and I got a pair of decent mics from Rode. It was their best non-tube mic. I didn't want to deal with any power boxes on potential location recordings.

My question is: Does anyone ever use these for recording shows? I know the NT55 or NT5 mics are popular for that. I have a pair. But I wonder if anyone ever uses these, or any large diaphragm condensers for live show recording. I have a Tascam DR-680 with the Busman Mod (so sweet) and I would love to hear any impressions from people who have used the NT2000, or just LDCs in general.

Thanks!

ALOT of people use LDC's for live location recordings....... I have never seen a Rode NT2000 recording around these parts, but I'd sure LOVE TO ;) Those are the ones w/ the switchable mic pattern, correct?

Bust out the figure 8 and try using them with new mid-side decoder on the DR-680, fun times!

Yes Bean, the NT2000 has totally variable pattern, low cut, and pad dials. It's a pretty sweet design. So, say in the studio you could dial in more room if you find that pleasing. What I don't know is if they are truely good mics regardless of the cool dials. They are supposed to be smoother than previous Rodes - not as bright.

I've never done M/S recording. I didn't know it had anything to do with figure of 8. I thought you just put the mics in an X/Y pattern and another as center. I need to look that up. I also have one AT4050 that's pretty sweet. But I have to say my favorite mic is the M-Audio Sputnik. It's a Tube mic, and it's the only thing I like on my voice. Anyway the NT2000's will be for anything I need to do stereo with - like piano. I just don't know if LDCs are the BEST coice for live music? Or of something like a pencil mic is better. Maybe pencils are chosen just because they are easier to deal with?

I used a pair for over a year.....awesome mics.....recently sold them to slim down my collection...They are large and heavy.  Great for stage lip recording.  You can do a lot with these mics...They will definitely "Bass your face"......The  low end is incredible...The mids and and high are nice too... I recommend the hard mounts..the capsules are internally shock mounted....the hard mounts help in slimming down the profile a bit.  The shocks mounts are big but very affective...

figure 8 microphone can be used to do mid side recordings. A lot of people seem to think that this can only be done on a soundboard but that's just one way.
You can do it with a figure 8 mic & card mic: http://www.wikirecording.org/Mid-Side_Microphone_Technique
