Matrix Question
« on: March 02, 2011, 12:14:06 PM »
Hey Now!

Quick question...

Went to see Greensky Bluegrass last Friday, at a small bar, and planned to set up my open rig. When I got there it was a less than ideal taping situation... I decided to ask their sound guy for a patch. He said that they didn't give out SBD patches, but I could have the matrix mix. I have never been offered this from a sound guy, and I had no idea where he was going to plug me in... He took my stereo 1/4 inch to 1/8th inch and plugged it right into the board. Sounds Great  ;D

My question is:
When I am listing the source info, what do I list?  Tascam DR-07 >  SBD/Matrix Mix ?!?!?!?
Not sure how to list this...

Thanks in advance  >:D

Perhaps he thought giving you a "patch" meant direct outs,
like you might use in a multitrack situation.

My guess is he just gave you the "matrix out" from the board,
but I would think the matrix out would be a 1/4" plug, not 1/8"
but since I have no idea what console was being used...

SBD (matrix out) seems like reasonable source info, IMO.

You have SBD > DR07.  His terminology of "matrix mix" and most taper's terminology of "matrix mix" is different.

Most tapers think of a "matrix" as being a SBD + AUD mix, frequently recorded onto separate tracks and then mixed at home, although sometimes it means an "on the fly matrix" of room mics + sbd feed into a 2 track recorder.

Most mixing guys think of a matrix as being the house mix to feed the PA, whatever it is to make the room sound good, and it's almost never mixed to be optimal for recording purposes.  Tapers on the other hand call this a "board feed".

Taper's slang of matrix has always confused me.  To me a matrix involves rows and columns of numbers, and I never could figure out why that has become common slang around here.  I generally title my 4 channel seeds as "banddate.akg414-sbd-mix.flac16f" rather than "banddate.matrix.flac16f" avoid confusion.

It was 1/4 inch. It is a 12" cable with a Stereo Mini Plug Left and Righted to 2) 1/4" Mono Plugs.

And SmokinJoe, I see what you are saying... thanks a bunch for the clarity.

As soon as I get this tracked I'll UP it so you can hear for yourself  :)

Thanks a bunch, all!

Never understood the "matrix" concept either - it's a 4-channel mix instead of a 2-channel mix, with 2 SBD channels, usually from the REC out.

But then, if sound guys actually call the REC outs the "matrix" then maybe it actually makes more sense.

^^ Of course, then you have various jokers out there, particularly on DIME/TTD/ZOMB who call some mishmash combo of two sets of stealth mics located at random places in the venue, or similarly, some stealth mics and an IEM/ALD a "matrix".   Based on the nomenclature above, that is clearly incorrect.

Exactly.  One I plug into frequently has Matrix1 and Matrix2 out,
which is mixed from the matrix section of the console.  While I
don't normally use those outputs, I have in the past.

I just want to thank you guys for all the info...

This is the only venue that I ever get to plug into the board, and this is the first time they ever called it the Matrix Mix. But, this was GSBG sound guy and wasn't sure what he was feeding me. Super cool guy if you ever go to see GSBG.
