tascam dr-2d tracking questions?
« on: March 08, 2011, 09:26:21 AM »
So, I've been messing around w/this thing around the house, and I kinda have it sussed out...but not really.

The directions aren't clear on 4-track recording - I know I can't record mic-in+internal mics, but I can go line-in+internal OR external.  I can get the line-in signal in "mix" or "line" mode only - which results in a 2-track stereo "on the fly" recording, NOT a 4-track recording that I can post-mix in Audition.

How do I do 4-tracks, like 2 stereo channels?  And this also has like an "overdub" capability for demoing, etc?  How do I get to that?  I went to the mono setting, but that wasn't it.

Again, the directions are less than vauge on the 4-track aspects of the device.  Gonna record my band on Sat, then try and do Ryan Bingham on Sunday.  Sat will prolly be SBD>line-in+Oktavas>mod ua-5>mic-in...Bingham will prolly be Oktavas>mic-in+mxl993s>mod ua-5>line-in.  Any advice would help.

Thanks.

When in dual "line" mode, the DR-2d will record two stereo files. It's in the manual on p. 44.

In dual 'mix' mode the inputs are mixed according the % setting on the menu and recorded to a single stereo file.
In dual 'line' mode you end up with two seperate stereo files, one for each input pair (totaling 4 channels).

The input level of the line-input is adjustable only via a menu input before recording (accessed by the 'dual' button on the recorder).  That means the level for the line-in is not adjustable once you enter rec-pause or record.  That adjustment is a variable attenuation from 100 down (100 on the menu means no attenuation, lower numbers attenuate the input level).

You can adjust the mic-input or internal mic levels while in rec/pause or recording, via either the up/down buttons on the side of the recorder or by using the remote.  Level  adjustment via remote works even when the hold switch on the recorder is locked (as do the transport controls on the remote), which is a nice feature.  For recording mics and SBD you won't have any need to match the input sensitivities of the two input pairs, but if you ever do I think the sensitivity of the line input set at 100 approximately equals that of the mic input switched to low sensitivity and set around 65.  Haven't checked recently but that's in the ball-park.

In practical use, the choice of which input to use for what boils down to this-
Choose the mic-input for any source that is likely need level adjustment on the recorder while recording- something that may not have another easy way to adjust signal level.   Choose the line-input for sources that have another way of controlling levels before the recorder (like at the preamp).

While recording you can switch back and forth between monitoring the levels of either input pair at anytime by the 'dual' button (you must unlock the hold switch to do so). The screen indicates either mic or line to the left side of the meters.
