Weird noise on my recording (JB3)

I noticed on a couple tracks that there is some outside noise on the tracks.  I was plugged right in the board so I'm not sure what this is.  It almost sounds like the operating noise of the JB3 is showing up on the recording.  Very strange and not sure what to make of it.  Then again I had some cable probs so this time I can blame it on that I guess, but we'll see what happens tommorow night.

yep, thats been known to happen from time to time... you get the sounds of the hd spinning on there.  Just kinda the problem of going line in on the JB3

Ok, yeah that is exactly what it is then.  It sounds similar to a cd spinning so I thought it might be my cd player.  Can only notice it between one song but it still disturbs me a little.  Any known fix or is it just something to live with?  I don't really understand how that happens...but oh well.

I use Samplitude for mastering my audio, and I use the FFT filter in that program to get rid of that noise, though there are still a lot of noises left.  That high pitched whine you hear is at 8.4875 kHz.

Yes.  IME, it's far easier to make a recording sound *worse* by doing this sort of thing.  At least for me, it takes a LOT of trial and error before I find the right balance between noise reduction and maintaining the quality of the music.  Depending on your WAV editor, there are usually lots of options for doing this sort of thing, so play around a lot to get a feel for what impact the different settings and configurations have on the operation you're performing.

The program I use (Samplitude) it is easy, and it does not make the recording sound worse.  I suppose it all depends on what program you are using, and I don't have much experience with different programs.  And, it's not noise reduction in this situation.

Yes, and the specific configurations used within the program.

And, it's not noise reduction in this situation.

Call it what you will - in both cases the goal is to attenuate certain frequencies in the recording, whether the attenutation is performed on a specific known frequency of X precision or the frequencies are calculated statistically as in a noise reduction algorithm doesn't really matter, IMO.

It sounds like from Karl's experience the frequency of this noise is in such a narrow frequency band removing it isn't noticable.  You're right on the money, Karl - if your ears like it, go for it!

While some people have experienced noise likely related to hard drive activity running analog in on the JB3, this is *not* an issue running digital in.

Well I taped again tonight and the noise is much more prominent.  I can hear it easily even during some songs.  Now, I had not been listening for it I may never have noticed.  But because I do notice I can not happily listen to my recordings like this.  I will mess around with Samplitude and try to figure it out, but Karl, if you are around I will probably have questions.
