In seems new: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1166&ParentId=104

My E-Mu TrackerPre that I used to record two channels to a laptop has lost its headphones, and from a recording I made yesterday may have picked up some noise.  This is a USB-powered pre-amp with two XLRs with phantom power. It seems to be new, and a reasonably high spec sheet. FWIW, the US spec sheet says max at 24bit@96kHz, but the Japanese website and the front of the unit say 24bit@192kHz. Using the Canon EOS Utility to control the camera, this lets me control and monitor recording from the laptop. Before the Canon 7D I used DV Rack (which is now Adobe OnLocation, but I preferred it before the Adobe modifications).

Does this look like the guts of an R44 replacement?

More like a UA-5 replacement.

Primary differences with the R44 is that this is not a recorder and has a 2 analog channel interface not 4.
musical volition > vibrations > voltages > numeric values > voltages > vibrations> virtual teleportation time-machine experience

I was thinking of the internals. While I can't speak for Roland, I'd venture that the internals for two of the units could be combined with a recorder to an SDHD and a touch screen LCD to make an R44 replacement. That unit could even have a USB feed as an option. If I was the Roland product manager, that is where I'd be heading leveraging the hardware and software design work already done. My guess is that is what they are doing and it would be 2012 release.
