sony pcm-m10 & rode video mic for live concert taping?
« on: December 17, 2011, 02:09:09 PM »
Hi all toolman here

Just ordered myself a Sony pcm-m10 and i already own a rode video mic

I generally  video tape a local rock / indi band in "small" venues ATM camera position usually about 30 feet or so from band  - i have tried hooking up the rode video mic up to my canon hfs-10 hd camcorder (canon set to manual audio 3/10) and even with the -20db setting on the rode video mic and the peak level meter on the canon not going above -12db the audio is unusable due to distortion

My question is, would I be able to use the rode video mic with the Sony PCM-M10 to get good audio results (ie no distortion) or is it the case where the rode video Mic (not stereo mic btw) simply just can't cut it at loud volume levels. Now i know that i could get the church audio 9100 and a pair of ca-14 cards for good sound but i was just wondering would the rode mic and sony pcm-m10 combo produce a reasonable sound without having to purchase the church audio pre amp/ ca14 package.

thanks in advance Toolman

It is my understanding the rode video mic is a shotgun/directional style microphone and these types don't seem to be used that much in live music recording since they are generally for voice. However, you can use any microphone to record sound since that's what they are designed for. The max input on this mic is quite reasonable so it should be possible to record without distortion but you will want to have the m10 in manual mode to set the gain.  Try it out and see if you like the sound. The rode video mic is a mono microphone and you're plugging it into a device that has no option for mono so it is likely just going to make left and right identical.
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

The Rode VM is not really intended for music. It's a mono shotgun style mic that works well for dialog and close sound. You'd be better going with a single point stereo mic or a pair mics either recorded separately and synced or using an adapter to go straight into the camera. You could also record with the M10 internals and sync that. You'd get better results.

I bought a Rode VM probably 5 years ago and tried it with some live music before I knew any different and was never pleased.
