Desktop Recorder w/ Toslink input ? Is there such a thing ?
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:05:08 PM »
Given the older Sony DATs had used this as a recording-input (via a special cable however), I guess there's something newer available among the solid state line of recorders with this input type.  Not necessarily a portable one, preferably something that sits safely on a table, i.e. not a Sony D50 for this matter.  If there's something like a Marantz PMD-671 that has an optical input that would been great for me.

Purpose of this is recording from TV / radio.  (Other suggestions welcome.)

Thanks for any help.

If I understand the question...a D50 Sony takes a Optical input...it is documented that it wants a current up to date version of SPDIF I.E. Grace V3 had to have a software update to connect with them...

also I run my old Denecke AD20 pre into a iRiver iHP120 with optical cable...

ONe of the Other suggestions, you could run a Sound Devices USBPre2 which would allow you to record into anything that accepts, USB, Analog(XLR & RCA) or SPDIF(rca).  SO youcould record on a computer, a bit bucket or even an older home DAT.

Tascam makes a line of Rack-Mounted Flash Recorders, with various features, depending on your needs...  http://tascam.com/product/hd-r1/

They use the more typical RCA SPDIF input rather than the TOSLINK SPDIF input, but for about $50, you can get a Hosa ODL-xxx to make a bit perfect conversion...  Not sure if this YS is still good:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=148014.msg1895081#msg1895081

***Do you have PHISH, VIDA BLUE, JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT or any other Phish related DATs/Tapes/MDs that need to be transferred???  I can do them for you!!!***

I will return your DATs/Tapes/MDs.  I'll also provide Master FLAC files via DropBox.  PM me for details.

Sony PCM R500 > SPDIF > Tascam HD-P2
Nakamichi DR-3 > (Oade Advanced Concert Mod) Tascam HD-P2
Sony MDS-JE510 > Hosa ODL-276 > Tascam HD-P2

Thanks for the suggestions.

Currently I'm using my D7 for a while for this purpose.  The problem is, I'll also have to eventually hook it to my DAC, in order to transfer the tapes to PC.  That's where the upgrade becomes necessary.

In the meantime of using the D7, could anybody suggest me a way to avoid changing cables on my DAC everytime I want to hook my D7 to it ?  Will an A/B switch do the job ?  Or should I be looking for an extension (Toslink) cable ?  Both possibilities sound not as good to me, though my experience with Toslink is very limited.

Thanks
