Mic mounts for AT853's: opinions please
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:29:10 PM »
Since I'm in gear s*ut mode, I figured I'd ask for opinions regarding with mic mount would be better: the Audix MC-MICRO or the SMT-MICRO. I would be using these to hopefully mount AT853's with Shure snap-on windscreens and a stereo-bar.

Thanks for the link, that's where I got the best alternative than the SP mounts. I like the donut option, but some seem to not like the fact the rubber wears out.

I would completely steer clear of the SMT Micro mount. Not only did the rubber mount shred apart after some time...the fit is so tight it ended up breaking one of my capsules (it pulled the outer plastic housing loose from the inner part of the element that screws on to the body). Seriously, I ran the 853's for the better part of 7 years in all different configurations, using all different types of mounts. If I were to ever run them again I would not ever even consider the SMT Micro.

Also just to note: after the rubber shredded I contacted Audix customer service and they would not replace that part of the mount. I even offered to pay and they wouldn't/couldn't sell me that piece. YMMV but still keep that in mind if you go that route.

edit: Just went to their site and it looks like they updated the design slightly (new style on left, old style on right.) The problems I had were with the old version...not sure if the new version is more forgiving or not...looks like it might be since it doesn't have those ridges around the inner part of the mount.

Home made kwon bar based on PVC plumbing parts from the hardware store.  Standard 45 degree elbows give you 90 degree included angle for DIN, cut pipe to length for appropriate width.

Yes, the PVC is the way to go. Any 90 degree or AB  spread is a breeze. I use a T at the center, run the cable through the bar and T, mount on any shock mount of your choice. Use rubber grommets pressed into the ends of the elbows and press the 853's into the grommet. You need to remove the capsule to get the mic body through the interior of the elbow. Replace capsule then press mic body through grommet. Flat black spray paint (before mics, don't ya know). The whole assembly can remain intact at all times. The mics protrude enough through the rubber grommet that caps can be changed at any time. I haven't added them yet but will likely use the bigass shure windscreen. Should fit very snuggly over the 1/2" pvc elbows.

I use the one pictured on the left for my CA-11/14's, and could have used them for the AT853's when I used those.
