DPA repair Question
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:20:41 AM »
Hi all,

Noticed on my last show that the V3 was spiking on one of my DPA4022. Took the rig apart this weekend and determined that one of the DPA4022 causes a short due to the cable. If the cable on the DPA4022 does not move there is not short or spike on the V3. The mic is fine with recording if I do not move it. So it seems to be the connection right after the mic that is shorting out not the mic.

My question is do I need to send it to dpa to fix it or can a local cable maker on TS fix it for me?

Thanks and any other suggestions would be great too.

There's a DPA office in Longmont where you can take your mics and they'll take care of sending it back to DPA for repairs.

I think the Colorado office might do cable repairs themselves.  I'd send them there

This.

No disrespect intended to any of our in-house folks, but for damage to a DPA mic like that, I would only have the servicing done by DPA.  If it's just a cable issue, they should be able to fix that fairly cheaply (and quickly).  If it's something else, best have DPA themselves assess it and do the fix.

Send it to dpa even if the fix may be trivial

Update:
Called DPA in longmont, CO. He said since the short is on the mic end he does not have the tool to do the repair and must send it to denmark. He says they replace the whole cable and cost is $185. Also, DPA checks it to see if it is working properly. He said if it was on the XLR side he could do the repair. He said a crackle noise is usually the cable and not the mic. Couple weeks estimate on return date.

One thing I can say about DPA is that, in my experience, the customer service is excellent.  Quick response and turn-around times, friendly, and fair (and I have dealt with both Colorado and Denmark).  Not necessarily cheap, but worth the money...

I had the exact same thing happen to me in 2005 with some 4022s and what they told you is exactly what we had to do. At least I saved on international shipping by shipping them to CO, then they took care of the rest.

I think he meant compared to someone who builds custom interconnects here on TS.com.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

Bummer. I'd def Send to DPA no matter what! Plus, like you said, they test the mic to make sure it's 100%

Update just received the mic back from DPA Longmont via DPA denmark. The Cable was replaced with same DPA mogami size wire and cable length stayed the same. The mic checked out fine and was recalibrated. It took just over 2 plus weeks and cost 185.00 for the repair. Quality job on the recable you can not tell the difference except cable looks newer and DPA cleaned the connectors.

Cool.  One of my 4022s is in Denmark getting the same treatment.
