Need help buying new device
« on: August 24, 2013, 01:00:06 AM »
I am looking to buy a new all in one mp3 player since my iRiver h10/120 is getting old but the problem is I want something that has tons of features but not sure which product supports them.  Basically I am just looking for an iRiver h120 which is little smaller in size with a larger hard drive (40GB+)

Features I need:
- Must play mp3 files & Wav/FLAC
- Must have FM radio
- Must be able to record audio in loseless format (wav/flac) (44k is what I want, anything bigger is bonus)
- Must be able to record FM Radio (doesn't matter if its loseless but recording in loseless would be a bonus)
- Must have slot for an external microphone (i want to be able to use my church audio mics)
- Must be small in size, about the size of an iRiver H10/H120 or iPhone 4S
- Must have good battery life... IF battery life is not good then it should have replaceable battery
- Must have a large hard drive (min 32 GB) OR SD Card/Memory Card Slot Support if HD is small
- Good/Great radio frequency
- When recording large file, it splits file without missing any recording (continous, 0 seconds missed)
- Supports playlist (.m3u etc...)
- Lock/Hold switch

Optional features that would be cool:
- has EQ (some songs sound good with different EQ)
- comes in black colour
- comes with silicone plastic case
- records in stereo mode (mono is fine too)

In a nutshell I just want a iRiver h120 that's smaller and has a larger hard drive (over 40GB) since iRiver h120 has all features.

I was looking at the iPods but they have too many useless features like camera/internet etc.. and not sure if its any good with recording. My other options are iRiver E40, E300 and S100 but Im looking for feedback from you guys

I think your incompatible features are:

- Must play FLAC
- Must have FM radio
- Must be able to record audio in loseless format (wav/flac) (44k is what I want, anything bigger is bonus)
- Must be able to record FM Radio (doesn't matter if its loseless but recording in loseless would be a bonus)
- Must have slot for an external microphone (i want to be able to use my church audio mics)
- Must be small in size, about the size of an iRiver H10/H120 or iPhone 4S

Really what you see on the market today are players or recorders. What made the iriver special (especially at it's age) was that it could do both and a decent analog in stage, but also an optical in and it was small. Best suggestion I have is to roam around the rockbox forums as I can't think of anything stock that compares.

If the iriver is the best fit, I'd just track down one, and replace the battery and hard drive and you're good for another handful of years. I've got one I've done that with a couple of times.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear
