Questions about my set up and running at Higher Ground...
« on: April 17, 2014, 02:14:31 PM »
Im going to be running a set of AKG 391's> Denecke PS-2> Tascam DR-2D at an upcoming show this weekend. I usually tape in a pretty bass heavy club where i need to attenuate the mics to -10 and run the low cut on the DR-2D at 80 hz in an effort to get the cleanest sound i can achieve. The room is very narrow from front to back and wide from side to side where as Higher ground is longer from front to back and narrower side to side. Wondering what people would think my best option would be? Run linear, 75ohm or -10 on the mics, and how about the settings on the DR-2D? run the same low cut at 80 hz? Really trying to capture the best recording I can get here. Any input would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

If your normal setup works for volume, then unless the other club is much louder or quieter, keep that the gain and input settings the same.

Lowcut leave it off. You can always apply a lowcut filter in post show processing, but you can't put back what you didn't record.

No problem with gain set to low on the DR2d.  Eliminate the low cut when recording as Scoob mentioned.  Try the same thing at the at your usual club as well.  If the resulting recordings are a bit bass heavy, EQ them afterwards with something like a simple low shelf-filter or graphic EQ.

The recording you linked sounds good.. and would sound even better with the bass fine-tuned by ear afterwards using adjustable EQ rather than being relatively sharply attenuated below 80Hz using the low-cut on the recorder.  You are also likely to end up with somewhat different if similar EQ settings for each recording and that's perfectly okay.
