Yes, the SBD that I get is the PA/room mix.  I realize it's not a perfect mix, but it's pretty decent and consistent; and I make the most out of it in post processing.   Getting my own mix was once mentioned, but never pursued, so I've been content happy to get what I can get.   I have a Tascam DR-60D arriving this week so I hope I can (eventually) achieve an AUD recording that can stand on its own.  It would be a nice dilemma for me to have a really nice AUD recording, and to wrestle with how much to mix into a matrix!

Thanks guys.

Of all the great advice on this thread the following from tonedeaf is probably the most important point:

"I tend to err towards more mic just because, being a taper, I'm biased towards the live audience tape and away from the sterility of SBD recordings."

Good luck, trust your ears and have fun!

I got the Church Audio set: CA-14 Omni, CA-14 Cardioid, and the CA 9100 Amp, and I've got to say that, when in the sweet spot at an indoor venue (or outdoor shows), I've pulled some recordings so sweet I honestly like them better than lots of recordings I've heard done with equipment more than 10X the cost of the Church set up (i.e. Shoeps + Sound Devices 744)
I see the price went up a little since I bought my set, but still: at $350 for two sets of mics and the amp to power them… It's a steal and the sound quality - nothing "bargain" about it.
Mics: CA-14(cards & omnis) and CA-11(cards & omnis) ; AT853's(cards, hypers, mini shotguns); Busman BSC-1 (cards, hypers, omnis)
Nakamichi CM300's (CP-1,2,3,4) Nakamichi CM700's (cards, omnis)
Tascam PE-120's (cards, omnis) Countryman B2D
DPA 4061's DPA 4022's; DPA 4080; AKG 480 ck61 and ck63; Naiant AKG Active Cables
Preamps: CA-9100; Naiant Tinybox (12v/48v + PIP 8V); Naiant Littlebox;
DPA MPS6030; Sound Device Mix Pre-D
Decks: Mixpre 10T and 6; Roland R-07; Marantz PMD620; Sony PCM M10; Edirol R-4; Zoom H6; Marantz PMD-661; Sound Devices 722

I have two outings under my belt with the Studio Projects + DR-60D and I'm super thrilled with the results.  For the band I record I've matrixed both aud recordings with the sbd and I'm happy to report the aud is proudly represented in the mix - maybe 50/50???  That's been a pleasant surprise for me as my prior matrix endeavors with a Zoom H4N was that the aud was just a sweetener in the final mix, definitely playing second fiddle to the sbd.  I've also enjoyed listening to and think these aud's can stand on their own; something I couldn't in all honestly say with my prior aud recordings.  However, in all fairness to the Zoom, I've upgraded my audio processing since then with Ozone 5, so it's not a level playing field comparing them.

This is the mtx of the second show I recorded:

On my maiden outing the week prior I recorded two other bands on the bill that night and since the final product didn't sound like crap, I uploaded them to the LMA.  They're both aud recordings, even though the one url mistakenly indicates sbd.   ::)

It's all a work in progress and I'm looking forward to hopefully getting better.
