Got Microtrack, buying DPA 4061s, What else?
« on: October 19, 2005, 06:56:07 PM »
I finally sold the trusty old D7 and bought a new Microtrack.  I love it; it's working wonderfully with my CSBs.  I've decided I'd like to upgrade to DPA 4061s however.

Could someone help me decide which preamp to buy.  I'd like to keep the setup as small and economical as possible as I will be stealthing and will be spending a good chunck of change on the mics.  Is a preamp absolutely necessary (or worth it?).  I've been recording straight from CSBs to D7 for 10 years but would certainly like to upgrade.

Thanks in advance for any help.

JB,

Absolutely get a pre, pre and A/D or pre w/ A/D.  You make the jump to a nice set of mics, you better spend the bread on something that will help keep the signal clean though out the chain.  You have to ask yourself a few questions:

what type of recordings so you see yourself doing in the next year? by that I mean stealth or taping allowed?

what do you wanna spend?

If you plan to stealth mainly, get one of two things..... a MMA6000 pre from DPA (if you have the DPAs terminated in the stock micordots) or a dual modSBM (mic and line mod, if you have DPAs with some sort of aftermarket batt box)...the other option is seeif freelunch will make you one of those mini dongles (cheapest route) for the MT....but the MT is a bit lame in the analog>digi conversion....you will eventually want to get something external.

If you plan to do some taping in a taping allowed situation, get a UA-5 (modded).  The cheapest way to get a all in one box....but not very helpful for your DPAs unless you get some expensive adapters.

Hope it helps

ANDY

I just bought the MT last week and have a 4 GB Kingston Elite Pro CF card.  I will be picking up the DPA 4061 HEB mics from Coresound along with a Mic 2496 on Friday.  Will be recording via coaxial spdif in on the MT so it should sound very good (I hope).  Going to see Cream again on Monday at the Garden and have great seats dead center on the floor.  Has anyone else a similar set-up that has some experience in the field using this set-up yet?  What are the results that you obtained with the MT?  Other then the typcial bugs which everyoneelse has already noted and confirmed numerous times the MT seems like it will be a killer device once they correct a few minor issues.

I think that going in spdif and using a good set of mics should eliminate the biggest shortcoming which is the preamplifier stage and its marginal soundtage and signal to noise ratio.

Andy,

Thanks for the words of advice.  I think the MMA6000 is just what I am looking for.  It's small and (relatively) inexpensive.   :)

Glad to have found such a kind online community.

Thanks!

Just got mine today and can't wait to try it out!

Some merchant fluffing in regard to a great DPA order...

Can't say enough good things about Frank at Cascade Media.  Ordered mics & pre on Monday and have them sitting on my desk first thing this morning.  www.cascademedia.net

Not MT, but for a while I ran DPA4060 > Mic2496 > JB3. Sounded pretty sweet, however the 4060s were too hot for the pre; your 4061s should be a much better match. I'd love to hear that setup.

Good luck dealing with coresound. I've ranted here before about coresound so I shan't repeat myself, but (a) I had a bad experience and (b) I'm not alone. Len is an assclown.

best regards,
stephen
