Topic: SLA charging question.. please help quick.

i'm having issues with my new sla's, i'm charging non-stop for bonnaroo the next 2 days, but yea i'm charging, and it seems like my sla's are releasing gasses or something, cause you hear a little escape of gas that makes a squeak.  It worries me, but the other battery did it once, and it charged fine.  the next one i put on this afternoon, has been doing it randomly like every 5-10 min.  its just a little squeak, but it worries me.  i'm pushing powersonic 12v 9 ah, and a 750 mah charger.  please help, im kinda worried...  but i'm pretty sure i'm just being dumb... thanks.

Gassing sla's is not good for longevity... How long are you charging em, and is it a smart charger?

its not a smart charger, and i'm doing the math since they have a partial charge i am charging them for like 10 hrs @ 750mah.  I hope its nothing serious, but yea. its still doing it, don't really understand, anyone had this happen before??

Sounds like theu're chraging too fast.  Charging too fast causes heat->boil off-> gasses need to escape.

If ya can tone down the rate that will do the trick.

yea thanks guys,  they arent heating up very much, even after one was on for 12 hrs.  i think its ok, i have my alarm set to switch the batts in a few hrs, but now its time for bed. see you at the roo..

if these are brand new SLA's and they are putting out gas, then you are either overcharging them (either they are charged fully or you are putting to much juice at them to charge them), and they are putting out hydrogen (which is fairly flamable but in that small of an amount wouldnt really do much/if anything at all) or they have some defects from the manufacturer like low acid levels would be my first guess, but these would cause the battery to get warm/hot during and for awhile after you charged them

i deal with non-sealed lead/acid batteries for a career, i have at least one battery gas up per night as a cause of low water/acid levels or putting too much charge to them (but these are 1ton 24 + 36v 1096AH batterys...)

the gases from them (my big ones at work) boiling from every cell is not enough to cause an explosion (givin that i catch them within reasonable time...), maybe enough if it actually got exposed to a direct flame or good spark to singe(sp?) your facial hair if you were directly in the gas, but thats about it

so them gassing is not a good thing whatsoever, there has got to be something wrong, even if its just a small thing, it needs to be corrected

sorry for the early morning ramble after a long nights work doing nothing but working on these big ass batteries

It prolly already is charged and you are overcharging it.  SLA's are normally stored charged, that said when you get them vs when they were manufacturered will determine the self discharge that has occurred.  (I don't know of any sales outlet that keeps em on trickle charge before selling so the initial charge is from the factory)  Run the battery (only down to 80%, further discharge reduces the number of cycles!)  and see what it does next cycle.  You might want to look into a smart charger in the future...
