Taping a show this week dilemma
« on: August 25, 2004, 06:50:49 PM »
Ok, I'm planning on taping a show on friday at jones beach theater and I need some help. I'm fairly new to this and I've already learned a lot from this forum!, but I'm always learning new things.

I've recently recorded Bruce Hornsby in lakewood and since but it up on BT. The gear I used was the  SP-TFB-2 (In ear binaurls) > SPSB1 (no bass roll off installed, level control instaled), (I know I know, stupid move) hopefully I can run down to SP and have one put on ASAP, > JB3. As I've read and expierenced this setup gurantees brickwalling or clipping in moderate to heavy spl situations. Unfortunally, the only mics I have are the in ears, and nothing else to work with, since the show is friday and I've ran out of funds, it's the only option. I did however order a SPSB6 with bass roll off, which I'm supposed to be getting tomorrow. So, here are my questions

If I use the mics with the spsb6 with bass roll off engaged, will that help clipping? I've noticed with the SPSB1 with these mics, I had to have the level allll the way down, almost at zero to prevent clipping at the hornsby show. Since the SPSB6 doesn't have level controls, what level is it set at?

If I get the CMC2's with the spsb6 combo, will I need to get a level adjuster?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

curious, how close were you to the stacks? you're still having trouble with the levels being too high even with them all the way down on the batt box and at like -12db on the jb3 using line in? you do have the firmware installed to monitor and change levels on the jb3, correct?

hmmm, I haven't tried adjusting the levels on the jb3 itself, I had it on 0db. I was pretty far in the back upper tier from the stacks. And yes, I have the newest firmware installed

yea, the jb3 itself can go up to -12. i think i've only gone into the negatives dbs once, but it saved me that one time. the levels were high as holy hell, off the charts at 0 so i hit it down to -8db and it came out pretty well. just something to keep in mind. i'm not sure how much the bass rolloff itself will help you, it's more the actual battery box there that stops it from brickwalling all the time, not the bass rolloff.

I've read several places that one shouldn't mess with the gain setting on the JB3 and either get a pre or do it all in post production. Have those that have adjusted the gain on the JB3 itself had positive/negative results??

I think you'd need to be stack taping to come anywhere close to overloading the CMC2s. Thats with the SPSPSB1 battery box.

I dont imagine the SB6 is that different though, so I guess level adjustment would not be necessary.
