I use ProTools.
What I do:
1- if the tracks don't peak above -6dbfs I normalize to 98% or -.02.
2- On the Master Fader I do slight compression, low ratio say 1.5:1, maybe 1 dB-2dB
3. EQ if necessary
4. Use a Limiter, I bring it down until it's louder but doesn't funny, it depends on the style and recording levels so there's not really a standard on that.
5. Set Limiter output to -.03dB (setting it higher can cause problems on some cd systems from what I've been told by engineers)
6. Dither down to 16 Bit. I usually use 24 bit sessions, even though I'm working with 16-bit audio. The compressor/eq/limiter will work in 48bit(master fader plugins in protools work twice the bit rate of session) so it's higher quality, Dither is on the L1 Limiter I use, so I just make sure thats turned on. Otherwise I'll use a Dith plugin on the last slot.
