m1 / d100 "load test" ?

can anyone tell me what the best method is to check load / prevent against misloads?
is there even a way to do so?

I always record a 2 minute leader in the field, then rewind and play it back to position the tape at 1:00 for the start of the set.  Seeing the a-time on the recorded leader confirms that the tape loaded and took a stream. 

The first rule of amateur neurosurgery club is .... I forget.

after confirming levels on playback, pause (don't stop) the deck and then hit record.  This should put the deck into record mode without it unloading/reloading the tape -- this is key as if the tape doesn't unload after showing levels on playback, you can be confident that it's still properly loaded for recording.
