You'll need a way to provide power to the mics.
You may or may not need a preamp, depending on how loud the sound source is, your location, the sensitivity of your mics, etc.

My mic is built with a preamp. I keep hearing something about a HOSA or denecke or something, which I have no idea what that is........I bought a really nice microphone(nice price too) and I am gonna buy tim's JB3...Also what is this optical mod or whatever...School me. I am going to start taping over here(germany) and want to know what to get, and what each thing does...I know I am asking a lot of questions, but your help will pay off, that is my promise to anyone who helps here. I have tones of musical connections here, and know all the major venue owners..I have always been a concert addict, but this is a whole new world......
Thanks and God Bless.

You have a mic with preamp built in. You have a jb3. Do you have the interconnect necessary to connect the mic&pre to the line-in on the jb3? If not get this cable.
Then stuff the proper batteries into their respective devices and push "record"... Enjoy!

The Denecke AD-20 is a combination preamp and ADC (though it doesn't provide power to the mics as many other preamps do).  Since the analog-to-digital conversion takes place in the AD-20 instead of the JB3, you would connect the AD-20 to the JB3 with an optical cable to transmit the optical digital signal.  But since you're running mics/preamp directly into the JB3, the JB3 performs the ADC and you just need the proper analog cable to connect mics/pre to JB3.

The Hosa ODL-312 and -276 are digital format converters.  The -312 converts an electrical AES/EBU signal to an optical S/PDIF signal.  The -276 converts an electrical S/PDIF signal to an optical S/PDIF signal.  Since the JB3 has an optical input for digital recording, and most portable ADCs tapers use output electrical S/PDIF and/or AES/EBU, people use these boxes to convert these electrical signals into optical signals so they may record digitally into the JB3.

I have the sp-pasm-2 from sound professionals, ( omni mic/preamp combo) and also a couple of other mics. I have the shure beta 58a(great vocal mic, use it in my altcountry band) and a sony ecm ms907...

all kinda cheap, but I am a begginer...I still do not know what the digital converters do, per se....
I think maybe that doesnt apply to me, as I am not taping shows yet??I am just learnin the mic/preamp/JB3 now, but I will add on later....So let me get this right. The mic alone does not get loud enough by itself when I am going to the line in jack so I need a preamp.I have that. Now after that when you start talkin about optical mod and hosa and adc, I am lost, but since I am only recording my voice, and a piano, the mic/preamp/jb3 is all I need, and I transfer the resulting wav file to a computer, run through a wav editor(I have audacity(, and I am good to go, right??) I am assuming that these adc and hosa boxes are for running out of soundboards??

I still do not know what the digital converters do, per se....

ADCs do just what they say:  they convert the analog signal from your mics/preamp into digital (0s and 1s) so the hard drive recorder can store the information (music).  Your JB3 has an ADC in it, and this is the ADC you're using for your recording purposes.  Some people use outboard (outside the JB3) ADCs because they sound better.  But for your purposes at the moment, the ADC in the JB3 is just fine.

So let me get this right. The mic alone does not get loud enough by itself when I am going to the line in jack so I need a preamp.I have that.

Generally speaking, correct.  Now plug all your gear together and give it a whirl!

since I am only recording my voice, and a piano, the mic/preamp/jb3 is all I need, and I transfer the resulting wav file to a computer, run through a wav editor(I have audacity(, and I am good to go, right??)

Read the Archival Info forum's newbie post again.  Regardless of whether you're recording a voice, a piano, a rock band, a car driving down the street, etc., you need the same basic 5 elements.

Now after that when you start talkin about optical mod and hosa and adc, I am lost, but [snip]
I am assuming that these adc and hosa boxes are for running out of soundboards??

Neither the AD-20 or Hosa boxes have anything to do with soundboards, per se.  Don't worry about 'em, you don't need 'em.
