It seems that USB not required.
The software can be put on a CF card and the pcmcia drive pops into the side of my laptop.

The PDA will sync with a regular Serial cable, if you would want that.  I doubt that you'd want to tranfer the music that way, tho'

hell no you wouldn't, it would take forever!
the good thing is that pda users must have a pcmcia hard drive or similar interface which would connect nicely to a laptop and transfer quickly.

Some great news out for 24/96 enthusiasts:

A low-cost 20GB external device formatted in 64MB clusters will record at 24bit depth  with a 96kHz sampling rate for long periods of time.
Also the 24/96 ability of the Toshiba PCMCIA HDs has been extended in native mode.

A long-duration 24/96 fix for the Toshiba HDs was created by Gordon Gidluck of Gidluck Mastering several months ago using pre-allocated files.

Once again, accolades to Gordon for some serious and useful bit-level audio hacking and testing !

Also of interest is the thread under this heading on low-cost 4GB IBM Micro Drives (CF -sized)

You guys using Len's PDAudioCF card for digi i/o?  I OWN one of these suckers, but STILL haven't gotten it working on my Laptop yet.

i have an ipaq 3800 that i have flashed to familiar, but now i cant get it to flash back...

is there anyone around that can reflash the thing for me, if i send it to ya (either that, or set up the linux software on the thing).. i cant seem to do either...

There is one in Yardsale (my bench unit, never in field)  I am upgrading my mics and am really liking my FR-2t.

well, i did it

here is the info (in case someone else around here searches for the info)...

ok, so with win98, the terminal emulator used made all the difference.
neither indigo nor hyperterminal could send the wince.gz to the ipaq.
absolute telnet did - first time out of the box... and that was it...

so, to recap, this is how i reflashed my ipaq 3800 from linux to wince...

1 - set up a serial connection btwn computer and ipaq (chapter 3 of the ipaq
faq)
2 - reset the ipaq. select serial connection (far left hard button on
bootloader page) -> the boot prompt will appear in the terminal emulator
window
3 - follow the instructions of chapter 9 in the ipaq faq ("Reinstalling
PocketPC")

it was kind of hard to cobble this information together, as handhelds.org is
down (and seems to have been for some time - like right after i flashed to
linux some 4 - 6 mos. ago ), so i would like to thank dano, gordon and
bobw for helping me out with this...

i am in the process of having a cable made to be coax RCA male on one end, and miniplug male on the other end. is there anything special about the miniplug that i need to know. the infamous cablemaker wrote:

is this indeed the case..?

also is a right angle mini referable to the standard plug..?

i wonder if i dont want both connectors to be right angle..?  would there be any problems inherent in doing this...

or maybe right angle on the RCA male only...

short term, i will be patching from my dat via an oade 7pin...

but ultimately, i want to have the sbm1 modded to look like this...



the cable would run from the side of the sbm1 to the pdaudio card input (which looks to be on the left side of the card). i only want the thing to be 6" of sturdy cable, as i will keep the pda directly on top of the sbm1 (like i do now with my portable dats, a hair tie keeping them together (yeah team hippy). so maybe right angle out of the sbm1 would be good, sending the cable straight up - would a right angle miniplug work best, or would a straight plu work better for the other side of this..?

i want to get rid of the pigtail and short the coax cable b/c extra cables (and extra cable lengths) do not mix well with covert i taping...

I'd go Mini-TOSLINK to TOSLINK optical, if that's an option for you.
Coax is fine, just heavier.
I used a Ratshack rca-to-rca with a right angle rca to phono for a while on the bench.
I would be careful with the phono side in the field. You'll want to dress the wire with a self-stick wire guide glued to the PDA
