Taping????
« on: January 12, 2005, 10:58:59 AM »
I am wanting to tape a few shows that are in very small and loud venues. I don't want to spend to much but I was wanting to find out my best option for simple recording the show. Should I use a mini disc recorder? Should I have an external mic? I don't need it to be perfect. However, how can I get all the voices of the people around me to not be on the recording? All your help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

Have a look at the 'Newbie Central' and 'What kind of recorder should i buy' in the Archival Information. Those are good posts to start ...

I took a look at both the suggestions and the link that was suggested, however, I have now idea about any of this stuff. Do I have to use a mic or can I use a digital recorder that has a built in mic. I'm going for something small that I don't have to plug in. Also, I am concerned about picking up the noise of the people that are around me since it is in a bar. Any suggestions there?

If you were to go to a bar with people around and you can't place the mic away from you due to the fact it would get stolen what equipment would you personally recommend to buy. (moderately priced)  Recorder and mics to pic up the least amount of crowd noise but the most of music. I appreciate your help.

Is it worth my trouble if I have to end up holding it in my hand.

Studio Projects C4 mics > Digi-Mod UA5 > Nomad Jukebox 3

But really its makes a difference depending on your budget, what kind of music, what kind of venue, etc.  Many tapers go thru lots of different stuff trying out new things...

Is there maybe a handheld one that I could buy that has a built in mic that I could get away with. Or do I have to have a mic plugged in? It doesn't have to be perfect by any means. If I'm holding it in my hands do you think I'll have a problem with the people around me? Is there anyway around that? I would like to have to buy just one item since I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

There are problems with all-in-one units.  First off, if the mic is close to the recorder, you'll pick up the machine noise of the recorder.  Secondly, most inclusive units are not made with the best parts.  Cheaper electronics decrease your sound quality and add noise to the recording.  Most folks here wouldn't bother taping with such a unit because the sound quality will be pretty poor.  If you're just looking to archive the show, then an all-in-one might work for you.  If you're looking for something that sounds anywhere near like the actual performance, you'll want to spend a bit more and go with a multi-piece rig.  How much are you looking to spend?

Well I was looking for something in the range of $300 or so. What I was hoping to do is to find a unit with basically everything in it. If I just set it on the table next to me won't it pick up all of the noise from the people talking next to me?

I'm sorry if I sound stupid about this stuff but it is because I am. I haven't recorded a single thing but I want to get this show and I don't mind crowd noise but I don't want the person next to me talking and have that on the tape

What would you do?
