Sound Card compatibility help!
« on: March 13, 2005, 11:29:32 AM »
I have a quick question if you can help I would appreciate it.  I have the wavellab program and I have been testing it in my home with no problems at 96KHz.  I unhooked everything and then rehooked it back up in the actual field recording configuration and the wavelab software is now complaining about the sound card no supporting the recording.  I am running C4>UA5 digi>Compaq Presario 2700/XPPRO Tweaked for optimal performance/Wavelab5.  Like I said before I got no problems with the setup in the home and the only difference is that I was testing it with no eleltrical supply, just the internal battery, but I then plugged it in to electricity and restarted the lappy and it acted like it was cool then when I actually clicked the record button and then I got the insufficient soundcard problem.  By the way I am running my UA5 into the lappy via USB.  I was plannin to record this evening, but will have to put it on hold for now if I don't get this figured out.  Any help is appreciated.

I restarted my lappy and no everything is ok.  I am going to try it again with just internal battery and see if I get the same error message.

If i'm reading this right you're trying to record at 24/96??  I wouldn't go that high over the USB bus, others have reported probs w/ this.  Try 24/48.  And make sure that in Wavelab under prefs, you have all the right settings for the UA5 drivers (ASIO, sample rate/bit), and that the UA5 itself is set to proper bit/sample rate.  And make sure that under start>setiings>control panel>sound that you have UA5 as the prefered device.

I have all of the setting set correctly and have been running this program for about a week now in my home.  Tonite is the first time that I will be recording live in 24/96 with this current setup.  I have recorded in 24/48 with no problems in a live setting and I want to try the 24/96 recording for comparison and to see if the USB on my machine can handle it.  I have read several posts about the USB troubles and plan to use the best quality setting that my system will support as it appears that some people have had good results in 24/96 with the USB from UA5.  What I was originally thinking was that maybe the sound card has a setting that prevents it from supporting higher end functions when the lappy is running off of the internal battery, and maybe it allows these functiones to be performed when commected to an electrical current.  My lappy can tell the difference between being plugged into electricity and running off of the battery.  If this is what would be causing the issue then I should see no problems with the batterygeek battery for my lappy, correct.  Brain is on overload with this right now.

Thanks
Cary

OK now I have tried it with a freshly restarted lappy both with an electricla source and with the internal battery and the Wavelab5 is working perfectly.  I have no idea what was causing this, but I sure hope that it does not happen tonight when I am trying to record at the show.  I will record tonight and see if everything works out OK.  Will report back to inform of happenings.
