Hi,

I just taped my first concert with the jb3 and the SOUND PROFESSIONALS MINI STANDARD CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES SP-CMC-19 with battery box SP-SPSB-6 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS.

I noticed as I recorded that even when turning up the gain the show did not record at high level (at best about halfway).  The show was a hot hot heat show where the show should have recorded more loudly.

the show came out clear and well but after converting to cd and listening on my car stereo (which is a good stereo), the volume of the stereo even when turned all the way up does not get really loud.  It is about as loud as perhaps a parent would listen to it if they wanted to hear it but not really rock out.

Michael

p.s. any ideas what could cause it not to record at sufficient volume levels?

Sure, I'll burn some karma... Not using a proper mic preamp is what caused your levels to be low.  i ran the SP822's with the battery box back in the day, and only the loudest shows would yeild decent amplitude.

Yeah, that is a BIG problem with the JB3... I wish i had cash for a modded AD-20 to use with my CMC-8s... anyone got something cheap out there?

as long as it's clean and clear, have you tried bumping up the levels with editing software?

Nah.  A preamp like the Denecke AD20 will work.  Its all about amplification.  Increasing the amps with software like Adobe Audition will work too.  However, in some JB3s, you may hear little beeps from your hardrive spinning because recording was not loud enough to override the noise.  A good preamp solves the problem.   Hope that helps.

Nah. A preamp like the Denecke AD20 will work.

why wouldn't it work?

normalizing should do the trick if you ask me.  i'm guessing your recordings sounds ok, its just not loud enuf for your liking.  if you normalize the audio, it'll take the highest peak and make that 0 db. making your whole recording louder, but no clipping will occur.

i'd imagine that'd get the audio up to an audible level, it might not still be to your preferred loudness, but it'll at least allow you to listen to your recording without cranking up your stereo.

a new preamp would help for the most part, but i think a little normalization will go along way with this recording.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.
