Topic: when to use attenuators oktava mko12

so i have a pair of these with all the caps and was wondering when you would use the attenuators?? not really familiar with them

are you powering the mics with the phantom power on the UA-5?

In my experience, attenuators are useful with high sensitivity mics, like shotguns.  Good shotguns have sensitivity of 70 mv/pa.  The senstiivity on the mko12 is somewhere around 10mv/pa.  So you shouldn't need the built -10 pad on them.

from experience.........never use the -10dB pads for teh oktavas.   they are horrible adapters.  noticable high frequency loss.

thats kinda of what i was thinking.....why would i want to quite these mics?? i dont understand why they are in the package.

When would i hypathetically(i am a bad speller) use them?

Mine are in storage in the basement. The only reason I am keeping them is if I decide to sell the mics. I wouldn't even consider wasting my time bringing them to a show, let alone actually use them.

why would i want to quite these mics??

well, believe it or not there are engineers that use this microphone for their "inside" mike on a kick drum.  depending on the drum and how hard the drummer stomps the kick, the pad might have to be used for proper gain structure and levels. I've tried this with an oktava on the inside of the kick with a D112 about 9" away from the center of the drum on the outside.   I had to use the pad for the oktava microphone, but the loss of high frequency didn't matter because i was dealing with a kick drum.  After some compression and EQ I was able to walk away with an excellent kick drum sound.

of course this has nothing to do with hobby taping so i wouldn't bother with the pads
