Brass Speaker Spikes?

My Polk RTi8 speakers came with some plastic cones and I'm curious if anyone thinks (or knows) if a higher quality brass set would make any difference?   


Anyone know of an inexpensive place to buy?  :)

Yes, and yes.  Brass is heads and tails better than plastic for dampening and deadening sound vibration.  There are some decent deals on ebay, search for isolation cones, as well as audiogon, search the same.

Sure thing Brian, I knew all of this because I ordered a bunch myself early this morning.  I got isolation pads and cones, as well as new speaker stand spikes in anticipation of my new speakers.  I can't wait!

Plastic is "deader" than brass.  (Very likey to be delrin, a brass-substitute thermoplastic with amazing properties)
The geometry is what reduces the acoustic coupling.
As well as the dissimilar materials.

A sandwich of plywood/styrofoam/plywood/closed-cell foam rubber/plywood can do wonders to decouple as well.
Dissimilar materials.

Pluses for the brass on durability and visual appeal.

I have brass base and height/tilt adjustable threaded brass screws (ground to points) on my missions.
They are low and need a little tilt. This also affects room reflections for bass.
I am still experimenting with the best angle.

I think delrin and brass are about the same in many ways.
Brass points will mark wood floors.
Delrin looks like Fluffy left something under the speaker   ;D

We use delrin on chrome shafts as bearings because it has low-friction and dissipates heat like brass.
It is said by some to be "plastic-metal."  .......Many similar properties.

I think brass is better, but I doubt you'll hear a big difference in sound.
Don't under-estimate plastics. 
Didn't you watch "The Graduate"  ?      ;)

Enjoy the brass, it's attractive, very durable, and does the job.
You'll have them for a lifetime.
