CEMC-6 Pin Problem (Omni's can't screw down)
« on: September 27, 2014, 02:53:33 AM »
Last year I managed to break the pin assembly on one CEMC6. Had John send me new one. All was well. I have only been using them with the cards, but now need to use my Omni's. Tried screwing one on the fixed mic and no dice.

The omni's DO screw down fine on the other mic. And the cards work fine on both. So not a threading problem.

The problem is that the new pin is longer than the original. That, and the omni caps have a longer contact point than the cards. So the pin is bottoming out before the cap can reach the threads.

I've emailed John for a replacement. Hopefully he'll have one. But I fear I will need to use them before it arrives.

Has anyone experienced this problem with these or any other mics? Any ideas for a temporary solution to get it working?

I thought about sanding down the contact pin, the only quick fix I can think of.

Thanks

Can someone with a pair of these help me out and take a look at the pins?

When you push the pin down with your finger, does it go down almost flush, or does it stop halfway down?

Thanks for your time. I appreciate the help.

Tried it out on my set and if you push on the pin it goes down almost flush. I don't think sanding down would be a good idea. Maybe something isn't seated right in the mic?

Great. Thanks for that!

I took it apart and found that the pin assembly is the problem. John had mentioned by email that the pin could be stuck. Though the spare pin also only went halfway down. So I tried pushing down on the spare as hard as I could (knowing this might break it) and the back little plastic circle popped out. The circle holds the spring and pin inside.

I thought the spring might be the problem, so I removed it and replaced the plastic piece back in, making sure it went as deep as the other pin I was sent. Same problem.

From what I can see the plastic pieces are either pushed in too far or the pin is somehow longer. John assured me the pins haven't changed since he started making them. So I must assume the plastic was pushed in too far, as the pin hits the bottom plastic piece before full going down.

I tested the theory by pushing the plastic piece only partially back in, and the pin went down perfectly. But it doesn't have a tight fit. I'm thinking to just add a drop or two of super glue along the edges to help support it. But long term, I'd rather have a new pin assembly. For now, I need to get these mics working for a gig next week. A DIY fix might be in order.

Thanks again for checking dnuggs.
