Little Feat SBD Xfer problem.
« on: May 01, 2005, 07:03:57 PM »
Has anyone had experiences with volume fluctuations with little Feat soundboard tapes?

I patched out of the patchbay that the soundguy puts out.  Analog, into the JB3.

The volume is all over the place.  No clipping, but it gets LOUD and then really quiet.

hmmm, maybe try normalizing the rms of the set instead of the peak, that MAY help :)

I am not tooooo worried about it because I have a 480> sbm-1> d8 copy also, so I was thinkinh of making a matrix of the sources.  With that, I think that the fluctuations will be un-noticable.

Also, is there a quick and dirty ratio for matrix-ing?  I was thing SBD/AUD 60/40, but damn, those 480's sound so good!!

I've taken patches from Howard before but not a huge number, so this falls under YMMV.  I do know that they generaly don't carry their own FOH board so he gets to use a different setup each show.  (I'm pretty sure they do have their own monitors, however.)

Who can say what state the line feed is on a board that he's not used?  I could say that in listening to quite a few recent shows that I've not heard wild fluxuations in volume.  Perhaps there is a point where he may balance things out a bit that is noticeable but that's speculation.  Which show was it, perhaps I can ask someone else what they heard?

As to a matrix balance I can only say what I've done in the few I've done in post.  Some the SBD is dominant, others the Aud.  You have to be able to tell which one has the quality that you want and try to augment it with the other source.  Not sure what percentages would be but the last one I did I had the SBD -12db in the mix.

HTH

I am not sure if he was using his own board or not.  The soundman was definitely not an employee of a venue, and he had a Ratdog placard necklace thing on (though I don't recognize him as Ratdog's soundman!!)

The show was at the Neighborhood Theatre, in Charlotte, last Saturday April 23rd.

The fluctuations are not TOO bad, but they are noticeable on some occasions.

im sure howard is still with them.
You can find his email over on there page (or you could just awhile back)

I wouldnt be suprised if he was running a cd burner or somthing else maybe .
I thought we had a problem with the KC show as I had a couple big nasty Digi fart's in the first track, I emailed inquiring if his copy had that , and I got a clean copy in the mail in a few days.

worth a shot. good luck.
