Is there a way to matrix with a UA-25
« on: May 09, 2005, 07:31:13 PM »
I know you can run a matrix with the UA-5 and thats why I'm looking for one.  I was wondering if it is possible to do it with a UA-25 because I can walk down the street and buy one.  Hence it would be easier to go with the UA-25.  I am going to be running into my laptop via usb, but was wondering if I could use the UA-25 to achieve a matrix recording.  Since it doesn't have RCA in's I am sceptical about buying one.

No.  As you said, the UA-5 has an extra set of RCA jacks on the back of the unit.  The UA-25 does not have these.

Also the issue of powering arises, but since you are going to be running a laptop then you should be fine.  I would just think that your battery life for your laptop battery would be dramtically lower.

Good Luck.

Any suggestions of a unit in this price range that I can use to create a matrix.  I guess I could run board direct into my soundcard and match the two after the fact, but if I could skip this step I would love it. As far as power is concerned, I have availiable AC power for the band I'm currently taping.  I have a back up batt. for taping other shows.

The UA-5 is the only other option I can think of, as far as running a matrix goes.

(The UA-5 happens to be the UA-25's big brother, obviously.)

when you guys say matrixing using the UA5 am I correct to assume you talking about using a single channel input from 2 different sources?

From the (ahem!) UA5 FAQ:

Can I run a soundboard + audience mics mix (matrix) with the UA-5?

Yes. Run your mics into the XLR inputs on the front as you normally would for an audience recording. Run the soundboard feed into the RCA inputs on the back of the UA-5. Use the gain knobs on the front and the single knob on the back to adjust the relative level of the soundboard input to the mic input. Depending on how far back the audience mics are from the sound source, there may be more to this. But this topic isn't covered here - search around or ask in the Ask The Tapers forum.

Though I suppose it's not explicit, so:  two-channel AUD + two-channel SBD.
